Official Or Not?

  1. Just wondering when is an engagement actually considered official? Is it when you have received an actual ring? Or is it when the parents know? What if there is no rings and the parents don't know yet? Does that count?:confused1:
  2. i say as soon as he asks and you say yes. i personally wouldn't feel engaged without a ring though and probably wouldn't tell very many people until i got one.
  3. I don't think it's official until there's a ring or a "will you marry me?" where a wedding will be forthcoming in the next year or so.

I know a lot of people do the promise ring or consider themselves "pre-engaged" but to me it's a black or white thing. Either you're engaged or your not.
  4. A pre-engagement follows a proposal if there is no ring yet. Sometimes the couplewait untill they get a ring then once the ring is put on its an engagement.
  5. I don't know, as my husband had a ring when he proposed to me. I am sure if he asked you without a ring and you said yes, that it would count!
  6. Ditto!

Kou, you wanna unload something to us? Nosey nosey wants to know :p
  7. I would say engagement starts the moment the lady says yes.... there are countries/ cultures where a ring is not given.
  8. Ummm ... okay, what if the person says, "Let's get engaged." and then you said, "Ok." Does that still count?

Eh, nothing to tell ... yet. Haha. I do have a Promise Ring, but that was at the 1st Year Anniversary and it's been almost 3 years since that. Also, we don't wear the Promise Ring unless we're physically with each other ...
  9. It's official when you both announce it to the world.
  10. I agree!
  11. To me there has to be a ring of some sort. Most of my friends are with guys who they plan on marrying one day (myself included) but just because he's said "will you marry me?" and I've said "yes" and we plan to eventually get married doesn't make us engaged (in my opinion).

For me and my friends we agree there's got to be a ring
  12. I view it as when he asks you and you say yes..hopefully a engagement ring is in the picture within a few months if you both plan on picking it out
  13. it's when you say yes to the question "Will you marry me?" with an engagement ring on hand of course..
  14. I agree with this.
  15. I think this way too. My BF asked me to marry him back in March 2001. That would make us engaged for over 5 years then. Now both sides of parents do not know and only friends know but always forget cause it isn't "official".
