EL DORADO, Kan. — The preliminary physical description of a body found east of here matches that of missing college student Emily Sander, El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren said.

Boren said the body was found around 2:20 p.m. Thursday, about 50 miles east of El Dorado, where the 18-year-old Sander had attended college and was last seen leaving a bar with a man who has been the subject of a nationwide search.

Her case drew wide attention after it was revealed that she appeared nude on a popular adult Web site under the name Zoey Zane. That site was temporarily inaccessible Thursday, as were several sites that bill themselves as "fan" sites of Zane.

But Boren insisted Thursday that Sander's Internet activity had no connection to her disappearance.

"The issue of the Internet and the spin-off of that has been literally crippling our investigation," Boren said.

Boren said the body had not yet been positively identified and the cause of death was not yet known.

Boren said investigators were now focusing on finding Israel Mireles, 24, the man with whom police say Sander left the Retreat bar in El Dorado on Friday night. Authorities also are looking for his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend, who was believed to be with him.

Boren did not answer questions about the state of the body or how it was discovered. An autopsy is planned.

Police have been searching for Mireles since they said they found large quantities of blood in an El Dorado motel room where he was staying. Details of what was found in that room have not been released.

The rental car Mireles was driving was found abandoned Tuesday in Vernon, Texas, where he has relatives. Investigators plan to bring the vehicle back to Kansas for processing, and interviewed his family members while they were there.

Sander's grandmother, Shirley Sander, said the discovery of a body would "very definitely" bring closure to the family. "We had to know one way or another," she said in a telephone interview.

She said there were no funeral arrangements.

EL DORADO, Kan. — A missing Kansas college student believed to be the victim of foul play apparently led a double life as a nude Internet model by the name of Zoey Zane.

Nude photos of 18-year-old Emily Sander appeared on a Zoey Zane Web site before she vanished, and investigators are looking into whether her modeling had anything to do with her disappearance last Friday.

"She enjoyed it. She is a young teenage girl and she wanted to be in the movies and enjoyed movies. She needed the extra money," Nikki Watson, a close friend of Sander's at Butler Community College, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "Nobody in El Dorado knew besides her close friends."

Sander's brother, Jacob Sander, confirmed that the nude woman pictured on the site is his sister, but he refused further comment.

El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren said FBI and state experts on Internet crime have been called in.

"Investigators are aware that Ms. Sander was apparently involved in a Web site situation," he said. "Allegations that this may factor into her disappearance are being thoroughly investigated."

Sander was last seen leaving a bar in El Dorado, about 30 miles from Wichita, with a man identified as Israel Mireles, 24, authorities said. Sander and Mireles had met that night at the bar, according to Watson.

After Mireles did not show up Saturday at his job at an Italian restaurant, his employer went to the motel room where he was staying.

"His motel room was found to appear in great disarray and a large quantity of blood was found in the room," Boren said. "Bed clothing was found to be missing. The police were called."

A nationwide manhunt was under way for Mireles and his 16-year-old girlfriend. A rental car he had been driving turned up Tuesday in Texas, where he had family. On Tuesday, authorities released a photo of a white bedspread with a floral design and asked for the public's help in locating it.

"Our hopes kind of diminish each day we don't hear from her," the police chief said Sander recently signed a contract for the nude work on the Web site, and told her parents about it on Thanksgiving, Watson said. Her boyfriend broke up with her because he did not approve, Watson said.

Sander's grandmother, Shirley Sander, said: "What you are telling me now is things we have never been told or heard. I don't know what to say. We have never heard anything like this and truthfully I don't believe it."

The company listed as the domain registrant for the Web site lists a Wichita address.
Watson said she does not believe Sander's pornography work had anything to do with the disappearance.

"Nobody even knew about this until one of our close friends came out and told everybody because Emily did not want anybody to know," Watson said.

The brown-haired, blue-eyed Sander was last seen wearing low-rider jeans and a "Don't Mess With Texas" T-shirt. She has tattoos and body piercings.

On Tuesday, authorities released a photo of a white bedspread with a floral design and asked for the public's help in locating it. As divers searched Walnut River dam area, police asked the public to pay attention to areas east of El Dorado along U.S. 54 to Fort Scott and along U.S. 69 to Baxter Springs.

Sanders' car was found Saturday at the bar. The rented 2007 Ford Taurus Mireles was believed to be driving was found by Texas Rangers in Vernon, Texas, about 50 miles northwest of Wichita Falls. Detectives and special agents from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation were at that location to help process the vehicle and interview Mireles family members who lived in the area.

El Dorado Detective Justin Phillips on Wednesday declined to reveal whether the relatives saw Mireles or knew where he went after abandoning his rental car.

  3. Saw this on the news Roo, seems all so senseless to me.

I'll lay odds the boyfriend had a rage problem.

  4. I think it's so unfortunate that a personal choice like this is overshadowing the horrific crime that was apparently committed against her. from all the information that has been released, it looks like it was the guy she met at the bar, which probably doesnt connect at all to the parts of her life that are being reported.

  5. Violence against women has to stop!

  6. What makes me made is that a nude photo is not porn, hard-core porn, and how is that leading a double life? Her boyfriend knew about it? She's wasn't filming sex and selling it. She wasn't working in the "industry". Do you knwo how many girls and guys pose nude and post pictures? And how many of them tell their parents? Because they don't, that makes them leading a double life? I hate sensationalism.
It's making her out to be this XXX starlet, which she was not.

  7. ^^

I saw her website before it was pulled down, did you?

  8. No, I didn't. Am I off-mark here?

  9. Yes.

  10. I totally agree. It wasn't like she was trying to be a porn star or something and is someone else knew esp. her boyfriend how is that a double life. Just because her parents or family doesn't know doesn't mean she's leading a double life. So the kids who drink or smoke are leading double lives as alcoholics and potheads? Give it a break...that's the media always trying to make the headlines more interesting.

Feel bad for the family who has to hear about this all the time. Just hope they find her safe.

  11. What I find disturbing is that anyone here can actually rationalize that selling one's body like this online is a good thing. I guess I'm old but I would starve before I resorted to that.

  12. I saw this story on the news this morning..sad...

  13. Grrr... one news station, after touting she was an Internet Porn Star, now says in fine print that has nothing to do with her murder.

You and me Roo, we'd both starve to death, but then, it's been a long time since 18, eh? :p It's been pushed how much it's easy money.

I blame society and "sexual freedoms" for a lot of this. Women are still exploited, maybe now more than ever.

  14. ^^
This stuff existed when I was 18 too Speedy. There were strip clubs, escort services, etc., but just no internet, so it was more localized. I feel bad for this girl, because she saw an opportunity to make easy money without any thought about the consequences. Stuff on the internet can be FOREVER. Someday she might have wanted to get a job or join the PTA at her kids' school and someone might have come across this stuff from her past. It is possible that she was easily exploited (as is sometimes true with young girls) and that also was why she trusted the wrong person the night she met with foul play.

  15. Oh, yeah, strip clubs and the like have been around a long time, even when I was a child growing up in the 60's. I know of one that's actually a historical landmark in my hometown.

But you are so right... for as anonymous as we "think" the Internet is, something like this will mess up the rest of your life. Especially maked pics! EKK!
