    Fall's Best New Bags

Marc Jacobs alum Joy Gryson launches a line of bags that are sure to hit It status. By Jenny Levin

It's easy to tell when a bag is made by someone who actually carries one: It's sturdy but not so hefty that it causes backaches; it's functional, so you can tote around everything you need, yet it doesn't have that "practical" look. Most importantly, it's chic, cool, and classic enough to be carried this season and, dare we say it, the next. One look at (and lift of) designer Joy Gryson's new bags and you'll know that she's an expert on them, not only because she worked at Marc Jacobs for three years (eventually as director of design and development of accessories), as well as at Calvin Klein and Coach, but also because she's a busy, do-it-all woman. At 34, she balances being a mom to a small child with running an accessory-design consulting firm with her husband, and now she is launching her own namesake collection.

"I've created something I'd want to wear," says the Manhattan-based designer. "There was a void in the market--just tons of embellishment. How much stuff can you put on a bag? I'm a little more simplistic, a little more understated. I wanted a Gryson bag to be something people are going to appreciate over time." The bags in her debut fall line, which will be available at major stores including Barneys and Neiman Marcus, could find a place on any woman's arm. They come in soft, slouchy styles with downtown appeal and in more structured, ladylike versions, all in workable sizes. "She nailed the perfect bag," says Jennifer Mankins, of New York's Bird boutiques. "The leather is great, the colors are timeless, the styles are cool but not trendy." And details like braided handles and vintagelike hardware make the bags stand out from the ever-growing pack of accessory newcomers. As a sweet touch, each style is named after Gryson's daughter (Olivia), a niece, or a friend's daughter, and the name is inscribed on a brass tag. Says Gryson, "I call the bags 'my girls.' It's something personal to me." Sounds like a true labor of love.

Already at the top of every girl's "most-wanted" list, the Olivia is dripping with that "have-to-have-it" style we can't resist! It's slouchy street-chic look combined with it's ultra-luxe Italian pedigree make it a must-have for the season. Supple Italian calfskin, subtly distressed, is trimmed with contrasting leather braided handles and double buckled shoulder straps. Each bag features a brass ID tag engraved with the bag's name tethered on a calfskin tie. Additional details include: single flap exterior pocket, suede lining, logo zip pulls, interior logo plaque, interior zipper pocket and slide pocket. Made in Italy. 17" x 9" x 12". Deep cocoa color with dark chocolate-hued calfskin trim.

The hottest new handbag collection this fall, Gryson, is a brilliant mix of urban trend and stylish sensibility. The "Sophie" has the polished sophistication to earn it a spot on top of our most "want it" list, while maintaining a streety-vibe with its of-the-moment oversized satchel styling. The iconic brass trigger-lock and studs perfectly offset the soft, buttery Italian calfskin. Each bag features a brass ID tag engraved with the bag's name tethered on a calfskin tie. Additional details include: suede lining; zip top with extended tab, inside zip and slide pockets; top handles. Made in Italy. 9" x 16" x 6 1/2".

  4. Cool!

Do you think the Skye is nicer in Chocolate or Smoke? I'm begining to doubt myself...
  5. I'm not in love yet. It takes some time for me to like something and right now, I'm just not feeling them.
  6. Same here. They're definitely nice bags, no doubt but, I'm just not loving them.:shrugs:
  7. I am really liking the Olivia in chocolate!
  8. I'm embarrassed to admit that I just ordered another Skye - this one in smoke (I have white already). :shame: I really like the bag, and I'm not normally a "slouchy" bag type of person.
  9. Don't be embarrassed! The Skye is just about the perfect handbag. It's the right size and shape, it's versatile, and of course all the Gryson bags are super hip!
  10. Love them! Thanks for posting!
  11. I saw the Skye at Barney's Co-Op last weekend and I can't stop thinking about it. I'm on a self-imposed bag ban for a few months.
  12. for those of you thinking the olivia is too big - it's very important to note: those measurements given (and somewhere in pf compared to the MJ stella) are of the bag UNSNAPPED. The sides unsnap and it folds out into a much bigger rectangle than when it's snapped closed. I just got mine and it's so gorgeous!
