I am also not in the US but yes, my store accepts cheques. But H merchandise will not be released until the cheque has been banked in, and funds paid into the store account. So, the customer will have to return to the store to pick the H stuff up after the SAs contact you.

To save the hassle, and if it's safe, pay cash.

But your problem had to do with the fact that you were traveling. Method of payment accepted varies depending on store.
