Colored gemstones....underrated and who loves them?

Lately I really love my birthstone (garnet),emerald, sapphire, blue topaz, green amethyst, and citrine. I think they are gorgeous as earrings or on a ring. I love them surrounded by diamonds. I definitely think they are underrated. It is a shame that diamonds always hog the spotlight.

I love bead jewellery,I think beads scattered on wires are just so pretty, especially when you use a couple of complimentary colors!! And Casto, its just shows how busy you are at the mo,always reassuring when a jeweller is busy, tells me their good and thier designs are sought after!!!!xxxxxxxxx

LOL My poor mom is getting frustrated because I haven't been able to get to her requests. She loves having her own "jeweler" and while she's happy that I get busier she doesn't like sharing me. *giggle*

I love coloured stones especially aquamarine(I don't own any) and rubies.
Ruby is my birthstone and my husband searched for a long time before purchasing. I was so surprised how hard it is to find untreated good quality rubies??? He found 3 to make a ring, and earrings.
I have to say that a part of me wishes that my ruby was my engagement ring.
I can't believe how much I now love rubies. I don't think that I will ever look at diamonds again.

My current favourite is a 5ct ruby that DH bought me for our recent anniversary. Here it is...

I've read through this thread and the one thing that was not explicity stated is that diamonds (carbon) are common - the pure green and pure red are the rarest one. An article I posted a link in another thread posits "...The continuing stability of the diamond industry depends on an artificial scarcity that De Beers has worked hard to create..."

This states one of the reason I am more in awe of the the other 3 precious gems (ruby, sapphire, emerald) than I do the fourth - diamonds. I just don't like a cartel artificially propping up the price of a common mineral.

Now the one colored gem I like is Tanzanite! Why? Because right now it is only mined in Tanzania / Kilimanjaroo area - naturally rare not artifically rare. (I could be wrong if so I'd like to hear from others.)

I just had to chime in.....

I loved and hated diamonds at one time another....because of the marketing and the rare factor that just isnt true.....but...the stone is hard enough and colorless with such sparkle for everyday, that I do see why it would be so popular...

Then, I tried on some Emeralds...and Wow....its totally hypnotic.......the deep green, which goes from darker to lighter depending on the light....the more I see them, I totally love them.....

Now Im hooked!!!! Its like nothing else...so pretty, and aquamarines are like little beads of the ocean water on your skin when wearing them....these have become my new favorites!!!!!!!!!

Hello! Brand new here but found this subforum and love it! I love colored gemstones and one of my favorites is Tanzanite. My Hubby bought me this right hand ring last year and I just love it! My picture came out a bit fuzzy, and I think the stone has a fingerprint on it. Oh well I just love the color.

Your ring is gorgeous! I love, love, love tanzanite. I don't see too many pieces in the jewelry stores around here, though. There is no prettier blue in the world than tanzanite blue.

I love colored stones. Most of my jewelry is colored gemstones. I really like sapphire, emerald, and various colors of topaz. I think the variety of colors is a lot of fun. I'd really like a tanzanite band ring. But, I do like diamonds and I have 3 pairs of studs. I prefer diamond studs for everyday wear over gemstone earrings though.

If I got married though and was given an e-ring, I would want a diamond, rather than a colored gemstone. But, not a "typical" diamond- I would ask for a fancy diamond- a light yellow radiant cut w/ side stone accents or in a halo setting.

You are correct...diamonds are "artificially" rare because one company owns like 99% of the mines. I still love them.

Tanzanite is crazy rare, yes. And good Tanzanite is very expensive. Also rare in high quality is Alexandrite.
