IMPORTANT READ-ME

Please post authenticity questions related to COACH in this thread. No PMs please.
For further information, please refer to the first post on page 1 of this thread.

Please follow the following requests:
  • Before you submit a request for authentication, please search this thread to make sure that the item has not previously been authenticated by searching the seller ID and/or item number. This is not a thread to ask general questions about COACH, please refer to our main Coach forum for such information.
  • Note that authenticators have the right to refuse any requests. This is a free service, but it is imperative that you help our authenticators by using the following format:
  • FOR ITEMS LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Listing number:
    Seller and site where listed
    Link:
    Comments:

  • FOR ITEMS NOT LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Where purchased or how obtained
    Comments:
BASIC PICTURES REQUIRED (but more may be requested): If necessary pictures are in the listing, it's not necessary to upload and duplicate them.
  • Front of item
  • Back of item
  • Full clear and legible creed text and serial number
  • Made in tags (when available)
  • Measurements
  • For bags with turnlock closures, show pictures of back of female side of turnlock
  • For bags with magnetic snaps, show pictures of the male part of the snap so that the numbers and letters on it can be read
  • If applicable, search interior of bag and/or pockets for small white tag with production information and include a picture of that.
Thank you and be safe!

The plant code is a problem, the month code is invalid and was never used by Coach, and the style number 4914 belongs to a completely different bag with pebbled, not smooth, leather. It's fake.

In the future, as long as you have a working link for the Ebay listing in your post, you don't have to post photos of the item from the listing. As long as the link is good, that's OK. If you've received the item and want to add your own photos, that's ok.
Just want to add the seller's ID to the post so it'll be on record that vintage4you2013 has listed a fake.

For future requests, please refer to post #1 of the thread for the required posting format and info we need to see:

UPDATE: SUCCESS! I contacted Carol Ives last night and sent her the link to the authenticate this thread and she quickly responded. She admitted that she made a mistake on the bag. She said she now has information that states that M$N-4154 is always invalid. She has written to the seller to let her know that the bag is invalid. She has known the seller for a long time and doesn't think she'll relist it but if I find out otherwise to please let her know. Hyacinth, I will send an email back to Carol with those links that you provided.

I tried to leave feedback yesterday but wasn't able to for 7 days because seller was a power seller. This morning I got an email from ebay saying that the listing was removed.

Thank you again to TPF for being an excellent resource.

I'm glad Carol admitted her mistake. She should tell her clients that she doesn't know enough about Coach to authenticate rather than attempting and failing.

Now that the listing has been removed, you won't ever be able to leave feedback. I don't believe the seller will be able to remove that ding from her account.
I hate to be the cynic but I've seen Carol's mistakes over the years and when called on it, she'll "admit" to erring but I've never known her to turn down an authenticity request.

As Whateve mentioned, she should be honest enough to let clients know the limits of her expertise.

Several years ago, there were several threads on the ebay shoes, purses and fashion accessories board (now known as fashion board). She'd "authenticated" several Chanel bags, some authentic ones that were deemed fake and some fakes that she deemed authentic. It was only after expert colourful_belle posted that Carol "admitted" to being mistaken.

Yet she continues to be too stubborn to refer clients elsewhere when she doesn't know the brands.

Although I've used her in the past (for LV), I wouldn't use her again. I prefer someone with brand specialists who know what they're authenticating. No one is expert in everything and most of us have the ability to know our limits.

I recommend authenticate4u. They have brand specialists, i.e., different authenticators for different brands rather than one or two "jack of all trades, master of none" authenticators as some other services have.

You're right about some of the other AT subforums. Some only do current listings, won't do just pictures, won't authenticate if they think someone is a reseller, etc. We're easy here!
I tried to contact them and no success using their website.
KORS is not on their list of brands that they authenticate so I sent msg asking if they do that and got no response at all.
Any other suggestions? THANKS.

I'll just add a comment about seller #3, 2010keith8541.

Although the listing in question has been removed, this isn't the seller's only fake. Some listings have pictures that are too blurry to authenticate and another that's an obvious J8Y fake.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/COACH-Legac...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I also believe this sold bag is fake. The serial number doesn't seem to match the style:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/COACH-VTG-D...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

And a "Sport Coach" was sold as Coach:

You're right about the sold bag, it's NOT a style 4160.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE !!!!

Authentic Vintage Coach #9790 Leather Crossbody Shoulder Bag
I can't tell if the plant code is B or D (J4?-9790), but both plants were still using the old "scars, scratches" creed format in September 1994, with "MADE IN THE UNITED STATES" ON A SEPARATE LINE BELOW THE MAIN CREED. The underscore in "No" is too long, the numbers are in the wrong font for both the B and the D plants. It also looks like the turnlock back has indents.

1- I'm seeing some white smudges on the lining and what looks like white coloring of some kind around the hinges on several of the pictures. The bag may have been re-dyed or even worse, colored with something like shoe polish. That bright white doesn't look natural on a 50-year old purse. Wait for WHATEVE to take a look

2- looks ok as to authenticity BUT THE STRAP HAS BEEN BUTCHERED. The seller mentions the cut strap in the listing but doesn't say how much has been cut off, although if none of the original holes are left it was probably cut at least 8 inches and probably more.

3- ALL BAGS WITH J8P- SERIAL NUMBER PREFIXES that say they were made in the US ARE FAKE. The back of the strap buckle is also stamped "Solid Brass" and Soho bags NEVER had solid brass hardware, which had been phased out almost 10 years before the date code in this serial number..

OUCH! (1) Yeah I was very impressed with how pristine the color is. I don't want anything re-dye [emoji20] or altered way too much like (2). Definitely can't accept fake [emoji24]

Looks like my hunt for vintage coach will continue. Thanks so much Hyacinth! [emoji253]
