Default Who Do You Dress Up For?
Today, i was in my social psychology and we were talking about the image that we portray and how other people influence your decision?

so my professor asked me who i got dresses up for...mind you i wasnt dressed up i was wearing a cardigan ,blazer ,jeans and some nice leather booties... he asked me if it was for my boyfriend or to attract other people...in my head i was shocked that he would call me out like that....
i told him that i did it for my self and its true when i get up in the morning and get dressed i do it for myself because i like it ...

i dont go to school wearing ball gowns but i do not like to wear sweats or pajamas to class.... so what is the big deal?

my question to you is when you get dress up do you do it for you to make yourself feel good or for you spouse or friends ?

I do it to make myself feel good as the #1 reason

- and secondary gain is to look nice in public, attractive to my boyfriend, and fashionable to other women/people into fashion.

i think a more interesting question would be if the friends/family/people you hang with dress similarly or differently compared to you. since you said social psych is about how other people influence you?

i definitely dress well for myself.

i wear quality things that are not flashy, so i'm hardly doing it to show off. i have lived in incredibly unglamorous places and still wore designer shoes to run errands because those are the shoes i choose to own, so i must wear them.

i went through a phase of censoring my fashion because i felt i was overdressed in so many situations (i.e. i dress up daily, but my husband's family does not...i'll be in a dress coat, dress, tights, GZs, polished makeup for a random dinner out, while they're all in parkas, jeans and snow boots [though it's not snowing out ), but i got over it. i'd always rather be overdressed than underdressed. if people have something snarky to say, that's their business.

I dress for myself because it makes me feel good to wear nice things. I dress for my husband second, especially when we're going out to a nice restaurant. Lastly, I dress for others (friends, acquaintances or even total strangers) but this last point isn't as important as the first two.

I agree with all the girls answers.. and your professor has some nerve putting you on the spot like that. I dress nice to school too, especially because I'll pulling at least 18 units a semester so I pretty much live there!

I like to always try to look nice, not only for my DH, but for myself. It makes me feel better to have made the effort.....and believe me, sometimes it's really an effort!

I have had other students ask me this question (got asked yesterday in fact) and it annoys me to no end. I dress nicely because I want to (it makes me feel good) and because students should in my opinion. Just because I am in college doesn't mean I need to follow the jeans-sweater-uggs trend. I'm sure professors don't appreciate the "I just rolled out of bed" look that many students model either.

What's wrong with taking care of yourself? If anything, I think it just reflects the general attitude of American culture weighing comfort > dressing nicely (although there is such a thing as comfortable dresswear, but I'm thinking with more sweatpants/jeans, uggs and large parka in mind, like GossipGirl mentioned). Whenever I'm in Japan, I always feel so frumpy compared to pretty much everyone there, lol

First and foremost i dress up for myself. But i dress according to what I'm doing, i can dress myself up in jeans and a tee or in a glamour dress and nice jewellery or in corporate wear. But i always put in effort into getting my outfits together so that i feel confortable and pretty in them.

Second, i also dress for my husband. I like to see the look in his eye when he thinks something looks good on me but i have also purposely worn something he disapproved just because i thought i looked good in it and likewise there are things which i refuse to wear that he thinks would look great on me.

Third, at work, for client meetings, i admit that during the first and second meetings with a client i purposely dress down, i work in Building Construction and get to deal with tight knit "big boys clubs" all the time, so i make myself look as bland as possible so that they can concentrate on my technical skills, and once i've established that i actually know how to do my job, i start dressing up a bit more.

yea.... when i go to school ...girls come up to me and say "ughh where you going today your going to meet someone after class with double meaning" im not the type to wear short skirts or boob bearing shirts but in their head if you dress nice that means youre going to w***** yourself off

I dress up mostly for myself, it's like a hobby to come up with different outfits and put different colors and accessories together. I also like standing out and dressing cute, so sue me if you think that's superficial. It would take me the same amount of time to dress in something that looks bad and I don't like, so I may as well wear clothing I do like that looks good.
