I'm going to visit NYC for the first time a few days before thanksgiving. As excited as I am, I have no idea what to wear...I live in a southern state so I don't have a lot of clothes for really cold winter.
How cold is it usually around thanksgiving? Would sweater+short downcoat+skinny jeans+knee high boots be enough? Are there any suggestions? |

You might want a heavier coat and certainly a scarf/gloves.

You don't have a down coat or are you going to buy one? You stated you don't even have one, but you plan on wearing a short down coat?
That combination sounds fine to me... but definitely make sure you wear thick socks & I agree w/the scarf & gloves. |

I get cold easily, so by Thanksgiving I would be in full winter gear. Hat, gloves, scarf, mid-length wool coat, warm sweater. What you said sounds good, just be prepared for anything. It could be cold and sunny, or windy and snowing/raining.
Have fun in NY!! |

I suggest a down coat but if you don't have the $$ for one then wear layers and the thickest jacket you have. I also suggest gloves, scarf, maybe a hat and if it's snowing then some boots. Cold weather is brutal!

it gets VERY COLD in the winters in NYC. you need a down coat better cover your knees...hats + gloves + scarves are musts. get a pair of uggs...you won't regret it. if you can go places by hopping on and off cabs....but it takes time to get a cab....if you stay outside more than 15 min...it gets very unbearable if you underdress.
it goes from 20-30 around thanksgiving...what will you be doing?? if you are going to do some sight seeing...you will need them for sure. i am not kidding you...the first time i came to NYC was in x'mas....i was soooo cold and got sick. have fun!! there's a lot of things to see/shop/eat here. |

Are you going to the city or upstate?
Either way - LAYER. I get cold far to easily, so I tend to wear a layer of silk next to the skin, then jeans and a turtleneck. Then a sweater - and over that a coat. If you stay inside while you are wearing your coat, you'll be freezing by the time you leave the building. The sweater should keep you warm while inside, and the coat will give you added protection leaving the building. Don't forget the gloves and scarf. Wear a hat too if your ears tend to get cold - mine do! |

ugh, gonna be in Boston during Thanksgiving, and to me, east coast is just too cold for me compared what I'm used to in California! Its so brutal!!
I learned my lesson from freezing my ass there the same time around last year. I am bringing gloves, socks, boots, coats, turtlenecks, cashmere, scarfs galore, and earmuffs! and gotta pick up those handwarmer packet things from walgreens. Better being sweaty than freezing haha! |
