Exclamation Vanity sizing gone too far?

I've always yo-yo dieted for years. My weight always fluctuates a lot between 10-15 pounds. I am trying hard to control it and lose the weight and yo-yo dieting for good. Well, 10 years ago I was 150 pounds, and wore a dress size 10/12. I lost 30 pounds and went down to a size 2/4. I was able to keep the weight off for a 2-3 years, but over the past 5 years or so I have gradually put the weight back on. So now, I am 150 pounds again, but instead of wearing a size 10/12 like before, I still fit into a size 6!! How is this possible?? Has vanity sizing gotten so bad that we're all half the size that we used to be?!?

I haven't noticed this myself, and maybe it's because I'm a jeans and tee shirt gal. My mom (who dresses up a lot and wears designer clothes) said she used to be considered a 6 and now she can fit a size 0 and her weight hasn't changed.

It depends on how you are losing/putting on the weight. If you are losing it through regular exercise and healthy eating etc, then you may well be losing fat and gaining muscle. You will actually weigh more at this point. When you put some weight on, you will still retain your 'tone', and have a smaller layer of body fat. So although the scales say you weigh x amount of pounds which used to be a size x, you can have more muscle weight but still be slim.
Hope this helps a little.. x

This will date me. I wore a 9/10 in highschool 15 years ago in Gap jeans. Today, I weigh only 5 pounds less but wear a 2 in Gap jeans. Yeah...

I wore an 8 in high school and I am a 2/4 now. I am the same exact size, and about 15 years have passed. So I definitely agree!

I know. I wore a size 1 in Gap 12 years ago.. they don't even make a 1 anymore and I held them up to a size 2 the other day and the 2's are SO MUCH BIGGER than my old 1's.

I am not that weight anymore. I've gone from 102 pounds in high school to 135 pounds now. (I am 5'9")

I have always been petite, so I cant even fit into many brands anymore. I always joke that I am too small for grown up clothes these days. And I am not crazily little- 5 foot 3 and around 110 pounds I think, and curvy. In many brands the 0 floats on me!

i know how you feel! i have the same problem. i always say i can only shop at two "grown-up" stores: a|x and bebe! i love their new xxs! my tailor is my best friend, he makes everything i buy smaller for me, even t shirts!

and yes, vanity sizing is def. out of control, b/c i used to be able to shop at express, banana republic, etc. and everything fit fine!!!

I've noticed that vanity sizing has gone to far.... mostly in the UK!!
over here in Holland it's just started...
I also find it strange that in one shop I could be a size 10, and in another a size 6.... I hate that!
Vanity has got to stop!

i was a little kid when sizing used to be "right" so i wouldn't know, but whenever i visit japan i realize how huge american sizes are! my mom who wears a small/2-4 has to get a large over there. i'm always too scared to try their tiny clothes, although i'm smaller than my mom i think vanity sizing needs to be fixed especially to remind me that i'm not as small as i want to think i am!

It's not actually vanity sizing. Brands have now adjusted their sizing to accomodate how we are all changing shape compared to when most sizing was put together in the Fifties at a time when people actually ate better than most of us do now with minimal fast food and plainer less rich food.

In the UK and US women generally now have wider hips and rounder stomachs unlike women such as Marilyn Monroe who was a US 10/UK 14 but would now probably fit a US 6/UK 10.

As our diets have evolved and the quality of food has changed, some better and some worse, it has of course in turn had an effect on our shapes.
