I have only just recently started getting into clothes. I'm hopeless at putting an outfit together so i get one of my friends (also a TPF member) to give me some advice. She is really great and everyone always comments on her outfits (women and men alike) so i got her to have a look at my wardrobe at home and put some outfits together for me. It has made a huge difference and people have noticed. So for all of you who think you need help in this department, if you have a friend who can help, don't hesitate to ask

ParkAvenuePrincess ~ You Sound Like A Stylist In The Making!!! :-) I Have A Few Stylists Under Myself Within My Company (We Offer A Lot Of Different Services). A Lot Jobs I Take On Myself. It's Very Interesting.

Definitely Lots Of Stereotypes Of What A Stylist Is......

I Will Say (A Little Off Topic), When I First Came On TPF Some Kept Commenting That It Was Stylists Faults That Stars Had Fakes......Do I Really Want To Go Out Of Business...No. My Clients Are So Precious To Me......Without Them....Where Would I Be????

ParkAvenuePrincess ~ Feel Free To Ask Whatever You Like...PM Me Any Time!!! :-) & Thanks For The Great Post!!!

Not sure if I would use a stylist. I need a good personal shopper to help me hunt down items I like and a good seamstress to create, alter, personalize.
I know people would and have used image consultants (vs. stylist). You get some of the same thing. But you get more, advice on types of clothing to purchase, advice on how to improve your image. I see that as a growing market.
ParkAvenuePrincess, You should give it a try. Good luck!

I'd like to try it sometime! I like to think that I know my body, what looks good on me, I subscribe to quite a few mags and read them voraciously and have since I was a teen and I think I know trends and what looks good on me or not.

BUT, I am always open to new ideas! If someone has a good idea about my style and figure they may just whip out something I never would have thought about that looks great!

ParkAvenuePrincess, if you're always being asked to take your friends out shopping and helping them accessorise and put an outfit together, then you're obviously good at what you're doing. And if styling is something that you love then i would say give it your best shot i really love giving my friends, specially my sisters, suggestions on what to buy and what would suit their particular taste in clothes. I read magazines like Glamour UK, but read very little vogue.
Let me if you ever manage to break into the styling industry. I would love to know you go!

In Los Angeles there are tons of stylists, but they are all chasing the celebrities. Most of the SAs try to be stylists for the non-Hollywood types. Someone bi-coastal who knowa style would probably be successful here.

I think it would be a good idea. I have never used one but the other day, I went to buy a blouse that I saw at NM and really liked. The SA helped me to pick a pair of pants and shoes to go with it and I was thrilled. I have made so many fashion mistakes. I can tell what looks great on OTHER people but not me. I am not sure how you would market your service though.

I haven't seen a stylist as such, but I did have a weekend with an image consultant recently, and it was the best thing I have ever done!

She did my clothing colour season, my jewelry metals, my hair colours, lipstick and blush colours, body ans face shape and what sort of haircuts I should have, what clothing types/fabrics/constructions I should wear, heel height, shoe toe shape, skirt and jacket lengths....EVERYTHING!!

It was awesome and I have folders of information and a colour swatch booklet to take shopping with me.

This has always been my dream job...and I just did my first wardrobe consultation/shopping last weekend!
First....I asked my client to go through a few fashion magazines...and tear our pictures of clothes that were her style or the look she wanted to portray! Then I made a list of what is in my opinion the essential wardrobe. I asked her some questions...and then proceeded to tear through her closet. We tried on everything that she was unsure about....and pared it down to what she actually likes to wear.
I took all of the old stuff with me and will be selling that for her as part of my service.
I will be going back for a follow up this weekend....with new clothes, shoes, and accessories. She can pick what she likes...see how the things work with what is already in her closet...and then we will take it from there!
It was great fun! And when she paid me at the end...I almost felt bad!! It didn't feel like work.

I have always been curious about hiring a stylist myself, but find that a) I truly enjoy styling my own outfits (it is time-consuming but fun) and b) the stylists I have come across, make their clients look like trendy fashion slaves. I prefer to look like my unique self so I opt to do all the work myself.

However, I would like a beauty stylist- my hair and makeup are always a challenge. Any ideas if there are professionals out there who can help with haircolor and makeup for people of funky ethnic backgrounds??

Me too! Sometimes, close friends know me as their pocket burner. I've helped style friends for every occasion, from everyday to dinners and even to prom.

'Cos I'm a guy, I go through loads of runway shows on the internet and get images off the sites.

My mom has used one before. She has pretty good style, I wouldn't say disaster or anything, it's just she is an excutive, needs alot of suits and really nice work clothes. The lady helped her pick out things she would have never thought to try (Hugo Boss, cuz she thought it was cut like boy clothes) and she ended up spending her money on clothes she loves and wears all the time!

I too am looking to get into this field as its just so easy to know what people are going to love and can afford....ive been thinking if you have a booklet for customers of your services you could go to department stores and see if you can do it freelance, getting a percentage based on what the customer buys...what do you think? its a really illusive pathway but i think experience is the way to build up your portfolio...xxx

A good stylist is really hard to find, so maybe Rachel Zoe's price is justifiable. I think 99.9% of personal stylists are not only completely useless, but actually do more harm than good. When you find a golden one though, it's like finding God himself.
