Default j crew coat question!
Hi everyone,
I would like to order a winter coat from j crew but I am a bit torn in deciding which one to get. Since I live in Canada & cannot get to a store to try one on, things are a bit more difficult

I would prefer to get this: http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/outerwear/wool/PRDOVR~17501/17501.jsp
(wool ruffle-front coat) because I LOVE the heather carbon colour.
But, I am not sure how warm it is... Does anyone happen to own this coat??? I live in Toronto and I was hoping to use my J Crew coat throughout the winter. (Average low in January would be -7C or 19F, but it can easily go down to -20C... appx. -4F.)

My other choice was the wool harbour peacoat: http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/outerwear/wool/PRDOVR~17507/17507.jsp
...since it is available in thinsulate (and petite sizes - im 5'4 so im not sure thats 100% necessary though...) However I dont like the style as much and more importantly I dont really want another black coat.

I've looked at their other coats but I dont want something super long, because I am not that tall myself and usually feel even shorter (stumpy, really) wearing a long coat.

Anyway, if any of you could offer some advice it would be much appreciated!!

If you want warmth, I would say get one with thinsulate. I have a jcrew coat from years ago, but it's without thinsulate and I always get cold when I wear during the colder fall months. Last fall it was 40F, my bf had a coat with thinsulate on and I didn't. I was FREEZING, and he couldn't understand why I was so cold.

I love the look of the first coat though, it's much more interesting and fun than the peacoat. If you get the peacoat maybe go for one of the other colors like navy or poppy?
Or this one in the bright cobalt? http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/Wome...7505/17505.jsp

Only seen # 2 in person bc I tried it on. Super cute just very short and not really useful for warm weather.

I love the ruffly coat, but in cold weather like that, I wear a north face puffy down coat that covers my tush. Those coats are not ultra warm, IMO.

I live in NYC and it's not as cold as Toronto, but I can tell you that I have J.Crew coats both with and without Thinsulate. The ones without Thinsulate almost definitely will not be warm enough for you. To get through the winter in a non-Thinsulate J.Crew coat, I have to layer- a lot. The wool on those coats is not thick enough for severe winters. However, I do think you'd be happy with a Thinsulate-lined coat. Last winter I bought the Lady Day coat with Thinsulate and it is super warm, but not super thick, so you can move around easily in it. I would recommend you go with one of the Thinsulate coats.

I looked at both those coats! I ended up getting the peacoat in poppy because I wanted a red coat, and I need it in the tall size-plus I wanted it with thinsulate because I get cold easily in the winter.

I think the peacoat is nice only in the brighter colors-the ruffle is very different. But since you're petite, it might be a little long on you?

A friend of mine has the ruffle coat and it's adorable. I almost bought it as well but decided to go for a more classic shape (the Crosby) and since it's on sale I couldn't pass it up. I haven't tried the Thinsulate coats yet, but I just ordered the Plaza with it. I would definitely try to get one with it, it's only a few extra dollars and I've heard they are so much warmer. Have you thought about getting a longer coat in a petite size? It sounds like you will have a harsh winter to get through- I live in Ohio, so not as cold, but all my coats are long because otherwise my butt gets cold!

Thanks everyone!!! I think I really must get a coat with thinsulate. But, since I am not 100% sold on the peacoat, I am thinking of going instead with the Double Cloth Carlin coat, in petite thinsulate black. Nice detailing & a classic piece. :)

I had the first one you posted. It was not that thick and I don't think it would be all that warm. It was also waaaay too boxy and an odd length (and the sleeves were way too long). It went back. I much prefer Carlin.

I live in Toronto & have a J crew coat with Thinsulate & to be honest it was fairly warm for those 0 to-10 degree days but it didn't really do that job if it got colder than that
