It does indeed have feathers at the bottom, ostrich I believe! I almost had a heart attack when I saw it on the rack! :) I'm really glad you like it, and I look forward to seeing more of your wonderful treasures! Maybe, I'll get some pictures of my vintage jewelry collection as well.

how do you know if something's vintage? (i.e. who are some of the vintage designers?)

It's usually a matter of guessing, but brand names do help.

Here's a small guide I found somewhat helpful: http://strawberrykoi.blogspot.com/20...s-vintage.html

And my goodness, I wished I could find the clothes she does! Her 50's dresses are absolutely gorgeous!

Queen_Kitty...that dress gets better the more I look at it...if it wasn't already wonderful enough! I really love it! I can't wait to see photos of your jewelry. I used to have lots until we were burglarized...I am now slowly re-building my collection!

wis3ly....a lot of times, vintage items will have a "union" tag sewn in the lining. At that time, a lot of clothes were produced in the U.S., therefore they were made by Union workers

One of my new favourite pieces. The bodice is pleated under the sequin neck piece thing.

I've got some more goodies!

My $6 Lilli Ann jacket and $1 lobster jello mold, both from Thrift Town. The bed is an antique and I snagged it for $100. It also inspired me to change my room color from mint green to red! Lilli Ann tends to go for a lot at vintage stores. The jacket has this cool dual-tone effect. I don't care that it's missing two buttons and its belt. I'm going to swap them around and look for a new belt!

My vintage $4 Gucci scarf, also from Thrift Town. Worth mentioning that it STILL had an older style Saks tag on it! Crazy what some people give away.

My crazy $6 Escada coat... from Thrift Town, of course. A woman at the grocery store said she'd been having a bad day until she saw my coat :)

$12 cashmere sweater from crossroads. Has cute little pearl details that look like peapods.

Valentino Golfwear vest I found in the men's section of Thrift Town. Priced at $5 but all clothing was half off that day, so it only ended up costing $2.50. It's nice and thick but it seems small for even the skinniest guy I know. More for me! I've also got on the first shoes I ever bought at Thrift Town, some Bally spectators that had recently been resoled. They were a bargain at $2!

Ok this is random.... but on top of knowing what's vintage and what's not, how do you know if it's a knock-off? Everyone has such gorgeous pieces and great deals, but I'm worried of looking for fear of being tricked!

I love Lilli Ann! I have yet to own a piece though
I think alot of the older designer stuff ends up at thrift stores because Grandmom passed, and the kids were just throwing out stuff in mass to not realize what it was. Good for you though! All the thrift stores/resale shops around here are so icky!

Oscarcat, don't be. I'm totally new to this and I know nothing about vintage (honest) I just go with my instinct and clues. I look at the tags, I look at the style, the colours, and what I remember my mother and grandmother talking about fashions.
I picked up two pieces yesterday which to me looked like 80's stuff, but upon some more research I discovered they're really 70's which is great, so it's a wonderful learning experience.

Also some pieces can be broken up, for example, I would never wear the two piece I bought together, I'll saved the cropped crepe shrug for pants and the sequin smocked crepe sheath dress as a "little black dress" because it's lovely on it's own with the belt and straps.

I've seen other pieces that were very large in size and I'm wondering if I can take them apart, so you got to be creative because you might see something and think it's ugly or doesn't fit the "vintage" description of what you were looking for/imagining.
I'd love to find 50's pieces but for now I'm pretty content with my finds and I'm definitely going to look for more.

Things in thrift stores can look so ugly sometimes that you need to go through everything and pulling garments out to ponder at them for a second and really take a look at it to imagine it in another light.
