I live in Ottawa (Canada) It's super cold & super damp. My warmest coat is a long shearling coat I got from Danier a couple of years ago.

Canada Goose (expedition wear!) long style goose down parka with a framed style hood that stands up against heavy wind.

I love it! I have horrible circulation.

Being in the state of LL Bean.... I have a long wool coat that didn't come from there! I tend to layer a lot rather than have a very thick coat, because the temperature is so changable here.

Fur - win hands down, it really does. I spend most of my time in Uk and I always wear it when the weather gets cold. This is a pic of a coat I bought last winter (when the dollar was 2.05 for £1 so worked out cheap(ish) for me), from Kaufman furs in NYC. Mine is just a little shorter though but otherwise identical.

I live in the Canadian prairies and it gets unbelievably cold here. I got through last winter in a fun fur car length coat.

Vancouver & Seattle's winters aren't unbearably bad (for the most part), so I get by with my TNA or Mackage wool coats.

And an umbrella.

Oh my goodness I hate the winter in Ottawa, around the middle of January I really regret choosing to go to university here!!!

I had planned to get a North Face coat but didn't find one that I loved, and there was a practically identical (fill, big hood) from Billabong. I LOVE that coat, I'm almost excited to get to wear it again. It's nice and long and has this neat print all over it when you look close up, and has nice big pockets and it's so cozy.

Sheepskin flight jacket I bought on Evilbay two years ago. It had been purchased in Aspen and only worn once. It weighs a tonne but is THE warmest jacket I have ever owned and brilliant when taking the dog for a walk in the winter..it even has a zip out hood to keep my ears warm and snuggly!!

I'm in central/south coast California right now so don't have to worry too much....but I went to school in Canada (Kingston - think halfway-ish between Toronto and Montreal) and I lived through the year after the ice storm! (This will probably only mean anything to Canadians on this thread).

I found that the majority of people in my school wore North Face coats. I had a Gap coat with Thinsulate and layered with sweaters/scarves/hats and made it through the winters just fine. Grumpy about the cold and sudden lack of sidewalks , but fine with the Thinsulate.

I know this thread is about coats, but the shoes you wear will also be key to keeping you toasty. My best find ever was a pair of sheepskin lined boots from Barneys (very heavily discounted at the Barneys' outlet). Once I found those I couldn't understand how I had ever schlepped to class in anything else.
