Default Clothing Sales Tax in NY.

Alright, I head this and I looked it up on nyc.gov and it appears to be true. But can someone clarify the sales tax thing for me?

I heard there is no sales tax on clothing and shoes regardless of price. Is this really true?!

But I was talking to my friend who works at Barney's in Bev. Hills, and he said that he still has to charge 4% sales tax when he ships things over to NY, so i'm really confused!

I'm assuming it doesn't include accessories, like handbags and scarves, but nevertheless.

any clarification would be fabulous! thank you!

we'd be good. we'd be great together.

Yes there is sales tax on clothes. I believe there is one time or 2 times a year where there is none but its only for a week at a time. I'm not certain the percentage since I do not shop in NY.

Tax on clothing in NYC is a bit complicated... shoe and clothing purchases under $110 (I think it's total but could be per item) are not subject to tax in NYC at any time. I believe only the dollar amoung above $110 is then subject to tax which in NYC is around 8.25% I think and includes city and state, which may be where the 4% come in below (just the state??).

A number of years ago they did abolish all tax on shoes and clothing for a while and they do have tax free shopping week. I am pretty sure one is late summer to coincide with back to school shopping not sure if there is another.

There is no tax on clothing and shoe purchases under $110 for every ONE item. This means you could buy 5 pairs of shoes, each pair under $110, and still not pay tax on them. After that, tax is the regular 8.25% in New York City, but I'm not sure about the rest of the state.

And yes, in New Jersey, there is no sales tax on clothing.
