Default Tea Parties?

Ok this is kind of a silly question, but what kind of food is usually served at tea parties besides little sandwiches and tea?

My mom's birthday is coming up and I thought it would be fun to do a small tea party/ luncheon for her... but I'm kind of clueless about the menu... I looked online and I found lots of recipes for watercress and cucumber sandwiches. But what else should I serve? Salad? Fruit salad? Cookies?

Any help/ suggestions/ advice is appreciated! TIA!

Scones, petit fours, jams/jellies/lemon custard for the scones, mini quiches, cookies, mini muffins, etc. I love teas!

Most high end hotels have high tea service- the Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, The Plaza, etc. and you can go online and check out their menus, too.

Did I mention I love high teas? LOL. I'm a diabetic but I certainly enjoyed before I was diagnosed!

Thank you so much for the suggestions!

So should I basically do brunch-type foods in mini sizes? And obviously I'll do coffee and tea. I was thinking about some sort of non-alcoholic spritzer drink too, or punch?

Basic Scone Recipe
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
6 tablespoons cold butter
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 egg
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon sugar

Preheat the oven to 400º F. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and soda. Using your fingers mix in butter, work with it until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Whisk buttermilk and egg together, and add to flour mixture. Stir together until a soft ball of dough forms. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently, turning five or six times. Roll out dough with a floured rolling pin to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut scones into triangle wedges and place on the baking sheet. Brush the tops lightly with butter and sprinkle with sugar. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until light brown. Serve with preserves. Makes about 12 scones

Chunky Chicken Salad Recipe
This is a wonderful and simple chicken salad recipe that I make all of the time!
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon salt
3 1/2 cups diced chicken
1 cup finely diced celery
1/3 cup slivered almonds

Combine lemon juice, mayonnaise, and salt and blend well. Toss with chicken, celery and almonds.
Serve on mini croissants, crisp lettuce, pitas or rustic bread.

Cucumber Tea Sandwiches
1/2 seedless cucumber, peeled and very thinly sliced (about 32 slices)
1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup coarsely chopped watercress leaves
16 slices white bread
alfalfa sprouts

Pat cucumber slices with paper towels to remove moisture.
In a small bowl, combine butter and watercress; spread on one side of each slice of bread.
Lay cucumber slices onto the buttered side of 8 slices of bread.
Cover each with alfalfa sprouts and top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side down. Carefully cut the crusts from each sandwich with a sharp knife.

It's actually called "high tea" as someone else mentioned. Not a "tea party" those are what I used to have when I was 5!

Basically baked goods ( cookies jelly rolls etc) and mini sandwiches. And they usually serve earl grey at high teas but you could do some kind of punch as well

Sounds great! I don't have anything to add.

Claire, you could do a punch too w/ some type of spritzer. That would be good, esp. if the weather was warm. Fun idea for your mom!

Thanks Elizat and Nyc!

Btw Irish Clover, in the US the term Tea Party is still used when it's a special occasion (you know, like a PARTY)

Tea parties are the best! Make sure you get scones with clotted cream (or devonshire cream) and fruit preserves! Some little delicate tarts are good too, like lemon tarts or coconut tarts. What about chocolate-covered strawberries? The little cucumber sandwiches are pretty standard, but I've also seen mini croissant sandwiches with smoked salmon and capers or egg salad on white.

Tea at the Plaza is great. Just went for my birthday a few weeks ago. Another great NYC spot is Lady Mendl's @ The Inn at Irving Place. Great menu. The finger sandwiches as both places are delish!

A friend of my mine had a grad party a few years ago that was tea-party themed. Everything was homemade: scones, freshly brewed mango ice tea, baklava, and an assortment of little sandwiches. Some different combos besides the traditional cucumber would be nice. Maybe something with hummos and roasted red peppers?
Oooh.. or mini cupcakes! Yum

Do you have a menu in mind now? I'm just wary about brunch-type foods in mini sizes, because the range is just so extensive. It would be good to have some finger foods that aren't tea party related in case someone can't have sugar, though (and as long as it doesn't put you out!).

My friend and I had the most awful food poisoning at Lady Mendl's, so I'd read online reviews first from other patrons to see if the quality has improved. I last went in 2005 and haven't been back since, so I hope they're doing better. Tea at the Plaza IS amazing, and the Four Seasons in Boston has an amazing tea service, too.
