well, i don't know if this is appropriate, but i'm just really excited that my first ever attempt to bake a birthday cake for my daughter's 5th birthday came out ok. and wanted to share my excitement with someone.....

i've always dreamed of making a homemade birthday cake, but each previous year i ended up buying one. this year, i took the bullet and after some improvising (i don't have a dome shape cake tin), i came up with a "fairy princess cake". i made everything from scratch (no pre-packed cake mix cause dh said "it's best to know what is in the cake"???). anyway, it's vanilla sponge cake with vanilla buttercream icing.

i also made some mini cupcakes for my daughter to take to school (has to be nut free due to the school policy).

here they are:

Wow--soo cute!! my daughter would love that cake!! I have been practicing making my grandma's sponge cake from scratch (getting a little better at it..) and it really does taste sooo much better than box cakes!
congrats on your work of art!!

J,

I LOVE the fairy princess cake! It looks so pretty and I am sure it tastes very nice too! What a lucky daughter to have a mom who can bake. I wish my mom would bake me things and not the other way around LOL!!

thanks for sharing my excitement...

yes, i was very glad that my cake didn't collapse or fell apart. the party was sunday late afternoon, but i started the cake on saturday morning....just in case it didn't come out as planned, i'd have time to buy a cake. LOL

the cupcakes were not my first attempt though. i've done them many times (both regular and mini size) for snacks, etc.

OMG everything looks fantastic! You did such a great job!

You know, one of my best childhood memories is from my 6th or 7th birthday, when my mom made me a "princess cake," just like that. 20 years later I can still remember exactly what it looked like and how much I loved it... It's one of those things that's always stuck with me

You know, when I saw the pics the first thing that came to mind was my princess cake too! I was probably around 6 as well. I remember it so clearly, the doll and the bakery we got it from!

That cake looks soo good, and the cupcakes yummy!
