Default Food For a Road Trip?

I'm going on vacation with my BF in August and wanted to get some ideas of things to take on a road trip to cut down on eating in restaurants and fast food. You know, stuff other than sandwiches and that will hold up fairly well in an ice chest.

Thanks for your ideas.

I am not sure if these are the types of ideas you were looking for, but . . .

Fruit salad
Cheese Sticks
Hummus w/Pita
Veggies w/veggie dip
Yogurt

You can also freeze water or juice in bottles (NOT soda or wine - they'll explode in your freezer) and use them as "ice" in your ice chest to keep things cold. As they melt, you will have cold drinks. This will give you a lot more room in your ice chest for other foods.

Also, go to Costco and pick out snacks that you like. Sometimes, they have individually packed chips and cookies. I love pistachios so I always get a big container of it.

Any fruit will be good - bananas, oranges, apples. Apples will probably keep longer.

Cereal is also good for chomping on dry or wet (for the passenger). You can freeze the milk as well.

Try doing some baking before you leave and that will save you lots of money. The baked goods usually last awhile (cookies, cakes, etc).

Hope that helps and have a good trip!

Besides the usual cookies and chips. Cold cuts will up in cold. Pack your lettuce, tomato separately and make your sandwiches. When ice melts, you can always pick up more. Have fun.

Bumping for more ideas - DD is going on a 5 hour bus trip to and from a high school playoff football game tomorrow (on a regular school bus!). Don't want her to starve and can't think beyond usual lunch sandwich/chips, or making cookies and muffins. I am going to pack a cooler for her. Can I make anything healthy and satisfying? Love the frozen water idea!

Maybe an apple or orange, something that won't bruise super easily. You can always pack some kind of salad (fruit salad, pasta salad, regular veggie salad) into one of those disposable containers, or even a regular one if she doesn't mind bringing it back.

my mom used to make us pita sandwiches growing up to take of trips. my fav is a ww pita, roasted garlic hummus, roasted red peppers and thinly sliced cucumbers. sargento also came out with these awesome reduced-fat cheese sticks. i LOVE the colby-jack! that with some wheat thins and some grapes would be good. for the way there you could pack her some yogurt and cereal. sliced veggies are always good too

Thank you for the salad ideas and pita sandwich suggestion. She might go for that! I found some portable baby wipes for hand cleaning. I always worry about sticky messes.

I like to pack up some bagel sandwiches with cream cheese, deli meat, and a little bit of cheese. They should hold up pretty well during the trip.
