I think the night markets in Taiwan is one of the best place to eat. Everytime I go there I will start from the beginning of the street and eat till the end of the street. It's soooo good! Their bubble teas, deep fried chicken pieces, the oyster noodle (e a mi sua), etc.

Oh my God! Oyster noodle! How could I forget?! That's definitely a comfort food for me.

I love the Taiwan night markets too... but it's so bad to end up at home really bloated! That and it's so dirty, whenever I buy stuff I kind of try to squint so I don't see how unsanitary everything is lol.

But bao is different from xiao long bao. Xiao long bao consists of a thin handmade skin, inside is a small clump of mince meat (either pork or shrimp) swimming in a temperature hot broth of very rich soup stock. If you have not tried one you should try it!

Okay, my list is really really long, but here are my top ones:

Hainanese Chicken Rice - Singaporean/Malaysian style; I find the other versions not as yummy

Wat Tan Hor (pan fried noodles with seafood & pork slices with a very yummy subtle garlic gravy, I especially like the blackened noodle pieces)

Pong Tey (garlicky Peranakan stew, usually made with Pork, but I use Chicken instead)

Chee Chong Fun (rolled rice noodles with a sweet sauce that is like a variant of hoisin)

Chwee Kway (steamed rice cakes with preserved raddish/sesame seed oil/garlic topper)

Chai Tao Kway (steamed radish cakes that are fried with garlic, egg, and sweet black sauce)

Fish or Preserved Egg & Shredded Pork Congee - for when my stomach's not feeling so well

Whole Fried Pomfret

Braised Duck Rice with plenty of braising sauce

Others that are close to my heart, but not necessarily top of the list of comfort foods: bakwan kepiting, bak ku teh, that fatty pork shoulder that's cooked in soy sauce that I can't remember the name of right now but which goes so well with porridge, onion omelette, stingray, chili crab, drunken prawns, kway chap, fresh sugarcane juice, barley drink, venison hot pot with green onions and ginger, roti prata with egg and onion, satay & ketupat, the list goes on and on and on......

And now I am officially ravenous..... With absolutely no where near me to get any of these comfort foods..... Any one wanna express mail me some???

OOH, soup dumplings! Whenever I try to explain it to someone I never do it justice! It's like wonton soup, but the soup is in the wonton!!

My fave asian soup is sizzling rice soup with shrimp. I used to call it rice krispie soup or snap, crackle, pop soup!

And no, I'm not Asian- I'm jewish and we devoted every sunday growing up to some fabulous asian delights!!!!!!!

Ahh thanks, I didn't know that!

I've had that with shrimp dumplings (delicious!), but I never knew what it was called.

My son has been raving about "soup dumplings" (NYC Chinatown) and now I finally get it. Does anyone have a recipe?
