Exclamation EMERGENCY...help! My Sugar COOKIES came out of the oven being BREAD/BISCUITS INSTEAD!

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/The-Bes...es/Detail.aspx

I kind of followed this recipe....I might have added a tiny bit of extra flour and baking powder AND not enough butter...

HOW CAN I FIX MY MISTAKE? I still have a ton of dough left and I'm considering adding 1 egg and a bit of vegetable oil (b/c I ran out of butter). Is this worth a try or another recipe for disaster?

Sorry but your best bet is to toss out the remaining dough and start over, this time following the recipe exactly...I highly DO NOT recommend adding an extra egg or some veg. oil (shudders at thought).

Did you bake for too long? Oven temperatures vary even for same recipe, I've been baking sugar cookies several times and every attempt different timing. I switch off the temp the moment the bottom edges turn golden, and when they brown slightly I promptly remove them from oven.

I think my first couple of attempts I left them in oven 1-2 minutes too long they hardened too much.

Sounds like too much flour. And perhaps, you didn't roll the dough thin enough for a cookie. If you don't roll the dough thin enough your cookies would come out looking like a biscuit. Also, if you added more flour during the mixing stage and then had flour to roll out the cookies on- it would make them look biscuity too.

if ure having trouble with the recipe, it might be better to try a drop sugar cookie recipe. I know i always get the consistency wrong when making rolled cookies.

Extra flour and baking powder will do that...baking is exact, you can not fudge a recipe.

The combination of too much flour/baking powder and not enough butter definitely did it. Adding eggs and oil would only make the problem worse. I agree with the others; if you're not exact with baking, there's no telling what you'll come out with. If you're desperate, I would try adding butter.
