Default Does anyone use sterling silver settings?

I am curious who uses sterling silver for dining at home? Perhaps just for holidays, or even alone?

I don't, only when I'm entertaining guests or on special occasions (Christmas etc.)

I would use it everyday but sterling silver can't be put in the dishwasher (at least not in my home).

I save it for special occasions or when the Pope drops by.

Just stop the dishwasher before it starts drying, take the silver out, and start the dishwasher back. It's something about drying it in there that gives it the spots, and you want to rub it anyway.

I have a cedar trunk full of vintage silver service that was passed down to me. Some of it is wayyy over 100 years old and includes salt cellars, goblets, and all kind of other pieces I'll never use, along with my great-grandmother's Limoges china set. It all stays either in the china cabinet or stored away. I doubt I'll ever have reason to use it, but since it's heirloom stuff, I'll keep it and pass it down.

I don't like to use the word "should" when speaking to other people, and do so very rarely, but you should really use it. At least the silver, you don't have to worry about breaking that. Using it actually increases its beauty, and allows it to absorb your energy, which will increase its value to your descendants.

It will be way cooler for them to have stuff that grandma actually used back in olden days than something that grandma kept in a trunk all her life!

True! But it's just me and my husband, and we rarely have anyone over for dinner. Maybe I should just take it out and use it anyway?

Hell to the yeah!

Who, exactly, is a more honored diner at your table - or on your floor - or your couch in front of the TV, a more distinguished breakfaster in your bed, than you and your husband?

You have entrusted this man with your heart, worth more than any treasure, surely you can trust him with your finest dining implements; why should anything less touch his lips?

Your grandmother has entrusted you with the joyous celebration of her history, of which the silver is nothing more than a material symbol, an instrument, that you might hear the cheery tinkle of her laugh, whenever you do what all grandmothers want us to do - eat!

So get out those goblets and listen to her giggle as you toast her memory every day, as one day those who come after you will toast your own, as you and your husband join her in giggling down at them!

I kept all my "wedding"" silver after my divorce and, after it sat unused in its velvet-lined wooden box for a year, I decided it was silly to save it for special occassions so I threw it in with my stainless and now use it every day.

Wow - I totally forgot I had it. Think I'll dig out my set and start using it. Maybe I'll also unearth the good china and make myself a cup of tea.
My pattern is Colfax by Gorham, and I was so in love with it - but it has only rarely been used... Here's a photo I swiped off the net:

I use mine from time to time, when I have guests and when I just feel damn like it.

Well said & great point! Looks like we'll be using the good silver from now on!

My mom is giving me her mostly unused set from when she got married.
Such a shame she never used it - all of it is still wrapped! And to think of what it must have cost!
If she wasn't giving us the set, i'm not sure that we would register for silver.....there is so much other stuff we need for our home...
