Default Do You Notice Any Differences At Restaurants?

I haven't seen this posted anywhere on tPF. I read this article a few minutes ago...interesting. Some of these practices are gross and disgusting. I would much rather restaurants serve great quality food and increase the price, as opposed to keeping the price the same or increasing it and serving crap. I think I'll be eating a home a LOT more.

My SO and I were talking about the same thing recently. Either the prices go up, or the portions go down, and sometimes both. I do feel their pain though, it costs more to run a restaurant these days, plus fewer people are going out to eat. It really leaves them no choice, however some of those gross things in the article like the pickle recycling are totally disgusting. I don't know how they can sleep at night.

This is nothing new.... When I worked at a movie theatre in the 80s, there was plenty of unappetizing stuff that happened to the food. Frankly, I'm surprised people don't get sick more often.

pidgeon, I figured it was bad, but I never realized HOW bad. I guess with the downturn of the economy, things are gonna get worse, and places are gonna start doing more and worse practices than they already are. I'm surprised people don't get sick more often, too. Maybe this stuff is so widespread that we've unknowingly built up some kind of resistance...

...but I'm curious, so tell me. What DID happen in the movie theaters? LOL. I think we as the paying consumer are very inquisitive and want to know what happens behind the scenes (and so that I can be careful when I go to the movies next)

I agree. I don't know how they can sleep at night. I am already weary when I go out to eat, but I try not to think about gross things that sometimes happen in restaraunts.
Reading the article makes me want to try to eat at home more often.

I think a lot of it depends on where you live... My county and the neighboring county are known for their incredibly strict heath codes. My family's business gets inspected randomly as many as 6 times a year and they check EVERYTHING. Some of the things they talked about in that article would = automatic shut down by the department of health.

As for the smaller portions, I think that's actually a good thing. I don't like the idea of being overcharged, but portions are way too big anyway.

I used to work at a restaurant that was generally good and VERY popular, but I once saw them spill some meatballs on the floor and then just put them right back onto the tray and into the oven. GROSS. And that was 10 years ago or so.

^^^Ew, they should have tossed those into the trash can! Or at the LEAST washed them off. But that is questionable, too!

The sushi at my favorite joint is being served in smaller rolls, sashimi (raw fish slices) are thinner you can see through them! They used to give free refills for iced tea now they don't.

Thats crazy! Price just went up at starbucks in MN but due to tax increases. SO much of cost cutting methods are against health code and just insanitary. LAME

I used to work in a sports bar restaurant and saw the same thing many times. Chicken wings and veggies on the floor picked up and put back out to serve.

I too have seen some restaurant horror stories live and in living color. One thing I like to note is, if you order a dish and you send it back do not have the exact thing remade. The kitchen will pull every angle to salvage what you sent back, and it most always works. I have worked at some upscale places and felt awful sauntering back to the diner with his recylcled $35 entree.....

As long as I don't see them drop my food on the ground and put it back on my plate, I will never know, and I hope no one tells me.

I recently went to a nearby McDonalds and saw that their score was a 60 something!!
I am not going back.. It is not good to get ANYTHING below a 90, and that's pushing it!
