And to think all I ever got as a kid was usually peanut butter and jelly on Wonder bread which was usually smashed by a mealy apple in a brown paper bag. And a broken cookie if I was lucky.

I make bento for my DH on occasion... he is like my kid anyways.

I also like to make bibimbab for him to pack as lunch... he loves those as well.

My kindergarten daughter is a picky eater too.
I don't do the bento box, but all of the containers in her lunch are reusable. I use a reusable sandwich wrap that can be washed and everything else fits into metal tins with lids. I got so sick of all the waste involved with ziplock plastic bags.
My only concern is that sometimes she tells me that the teachers won't let her finish her lunch. I guess it's because they only have so much time, so if they talk too much, they have to pack up whether or not they are actually finished eating.

I'm getting ready to send my kid to school, too. Thanks for the links to the bento sites! I will definitely try to veer away from boring sandwiches.

In elementary school I bought food at the cafeteria. I think that was the norm because it was pretty cheap. Starting middle and high school I brought a Zojirushi Bento box container that could keep my food warm so I made food from fried rice to spaghetti. Now in college, I go back to my room for lunch and dinner to make my own meals. :)
