My mom was married in 67 and had platinum. I don't know if she really had a preference, but my dad was quite a bit older than her and told her that platinum was better (as were emerald cut diamonds in his opinion). She had a beautiful wedding set, and I really wish she had not had it reset in the 90's, but what can you do?

My mom has yellow gold wedding set too. SHe was married in the 80s. Yellow gold is mainly what she wears anyway. I really want a white gold set and a yellow gold wedding band. Is that weird? I want to be able to match my jewelry for the day. LOL! I told BF that and he just laughed. LOL!

I was married in 1986 and my wedding set is yellow gold. I don't remember platinum even being an option then, although I'm sure it was.
My husband prefers white gold so his band is WG.

I mix and match my metals freely and would never consider changing my set. The way I look at it, yellow gold with diamonds combines both colors of metals because the diamonds look "white" and the band is YG.

chessmont, I went digging through old photos and have a couple for you. The first is a pic of my engagement ring (taken a few years ago for the e-ring thread here), and the second is my e-ring and wedding ring together (clipped from an old pic of me holding a bag). When we were looking at rings, DH was very keen on yellow gold as opposed to white gold or platinum because so many places are doing costume jewelry in sterling and plated metals to mimic platinum. He loved the yellow gold, and I find that it is a big warmer and more colorful than the white metals which sometimes look monotone (although I LOVE white metals, especially with diamonds) on me because I am so pale. I have thought about having mine reset in platinum at some point only because it is a harder metal and I wear my rings ALL the time, so they don't get babied, but they have held up well thus far. I have a friend who refuses to even look at white metals, so I think it is purely personal preference. I am also attaching a couple of photos of other members' YG rings which are lovely (one is TPF, one is TRF)...hope they do not mind!

ET yours is beautiful!

Thank you all for instilling confidence in my choice those years ago - it really is nice to see all the 'warm' gold bands set with 'ice' LOL.

Thanks for the pics for Yellow Gold! (and for TT as well)

I honestly don't think now I'd change to WG or platinum. Not in my sentimental diamond. Maybe if I got another one from DH someday, I would do white just for something different...

-not weird at all! Coming from one who has a mixed set. I just realized the pic probably doesn't show the WG band well, maybe cuz of the flash.

Let's start a new craze for TT wedding sets

- I felt the same way; white metal could be anything lol (but then again, YG could be gold plated!)

I always saw YG as expensive and luxury. My family was not poor, but very working class, and 'real' gold jewelry was something not often owned by anyone I knew or was related to...

I like the TT idea. I have thought of putting small WG or platinum bands on either side of my rings, but mine are pretty wide and that might push the comfort level over the edge for me! But I think my mom does that with her rings. Two small gold rings flanking a platinum engagement ring and wedding band.

As for gold being "luxury"...in recent months the price of platinum has dropped while gold was at one of the highest points ever. I don't know if that is still the case, but it is something to think about!

-Huh, interesting; I don't keep track of that. I never look at platinum, just assume it is always going to be higher than gold.
