DH and I looked at rings while we were still dating and he knew the general style I liked: no solitairs or 3 stone rings, white gold or platinum, etc.

He ended up having a setting custom made which consisted of a center stone and 2 smaller stones on each side. And I absolutely loved it!

Then I got bitten by the "upgrade bug" and initially just wanted to change the setting but keep the original solitaire. DH didn't want me messing with his "creation", so to speak, so he told me to just get a whole new ring! Which I did!

But I think it's extremely important for the guy to be in tune with what his future fiance/wife wants. If I were to do it all over again, I would pick out my own ring.

I actually picked my first ring, and he has been a part of all of the upgrades!

I think it should be a surprise as well, personally when I propose I think I'll do it without a ring and then pick one out together after the fact.

I am little bit old fashion regarding this. I think the guys should pick out the ring for the proposal. The minimium that the guys should know is the cut, clarity, color, and size that his GF like. The ring should be a surprise and romantic. The guys can just for the simple setting.... later they can pick the setting together.

my bf just wants to make sure i am happy with this ring i will be wearing for a very long time. maybe sometime in the very distant future i will end up with a new setting, but as far as the diamond is concerned i will keep it and perhaps re-set it in a necklace or a right hand ring and upgrade my diamond. my SO is adorable and i know he tries hard (it took him a couple hours just to decide what necklace to buy me for christmas last year) but style wise with jewelry, i am not sure he really knows mine. some men just don't pay attention to that stuff. he will get better as time goes on, but we don't get to go into jewelry stores together very often because money's been tight (so no reason for us to walk into somewhere looking at things we can't afford). i'd like for him to pick it out on his own and be surprised when he gives it to me, but at the same time i want to make sure i love it, as does he. so we'll pick it out together, put it on layaway, so i will know it's there. but i won't know when it's done being paid for, and when it will end up on my finger. so in a way, yes, it will still be a surprise.

The couple should go shopping together, browse all the styles, girl picks one and then boy goes out and secretly buys it when the time is right.

I would do the same if I had a BF! We would probably research it and then talk about what designs/styles, etc. I like. And then I would send him off on his own to look at it IRL. Then hopefully surprise me. I'm waiting anxiously for that day to happen. XD

This is exactly what my boyfriend and I are doing. I have one picked out...I think he might have bought it recently

My boyfriend and I looked at a bunch of different styles and I narrowed it down to a few that I loved. I told him to take it from there and pick one out of the ones I narrowed it down to.

I didn't pick out my engagement ring because I didn't know that my husband wanted to get married. It was a surprise, but when he gave it to me he told me that, if I didn't like it, I could exchange it. I was like, No way! My ring is very modest, but it's the thought that counts! My husband doesn't know a lot about jewelry, so if I'd been involved in the process I MIGHT have gotten something different, but...I like my ring and never even plan to upgrade. We did pick out bands together, though.
