Default What is a cocktail ring?
What is a cocktail ring? I just heard of this. Is it an essential? What does it look like? I'm very fair, slim (slim hands also), with dark brown/black hair, what would look good on me?

I think it's a big oversized sparkley ring with oversized jewels. I bet there is a better description - but that's what I think of when I hear cocktail ring!

A cocktail ring is a statement piece, that you would not wear for everyday use (in my opinion). A few pics:

I really like cocktail rings, but I can't afford too expensive rings, and I don't think that I want to spend too much money on rings so big.I'm terrible in wearing rings and I'm too scared that I can broke them (I've scratched my aqua promise ring in two different points..and is set in a basket setting!!),they're so big!I always hit my hands with everything!!!So I'm looking on ebay,I've found nice pieces at really low price.Surely the quality isn't high, but for me it's ok.At the end,if I broke a 50$ ring,I don't feel too guilty

I found this on "wisegeek" about a cocktail ring. there is more but this is the short version. Interesting how the ring got its name.

The cocktail ring is meant to be a dramatic large ring, worn at cocktail parties. The cocktail ring was especially popular to wear during US prohibition at illegal cocktail parties. Such a ring flaunted not only the fact that one was drinking illegally, but also that one was doing it with style.

Popularity of the cocktail ring gained in the 1940s and 1950s, as cocktail parties continued to be popular events. Although cocktail parties are less common now, wearing a cocktail ring with huge diamonds or other large precious or semi-precious gems is still popular for formal dressy occasions, and especially for events like premieres of films, Broadway theater productions, or award shows like the Oscars or Emmys.

lol, cute description "big as a purse".

but in general it's just an oversized bling ring w/a big stone in the center. you could always find costume jewelry cocktail rings for cheap.

cocktail rings don't need to be pricey; they're basically big, fun, novelty pieces!

A cocktail ring is a bold ring that is worn usually in the evening. While it must sparkle, it needn't be made of real stones It could be crytal or cz as easily a diamonds. There are lots of great rings in stores right now

Well said. You can find a nice looking costume cocktail ring at Erwin Pearl. No need to have something crazy expensive on even semi-precious. They are for fun and you don't want to spend a lot b/c they are addicting and you always see newer and better ones.

I didn't have time the past days to go shopping and browse for a ring or anything, but it is top on my list!!! Thanks for explaining to me, and thanks for all the info!

What stones, colors and cuts you think it would look pretty on me?

What Swanky said.

I have several, and they're all very inexpensive, as I'm prone to losing and misplacing small jewelry items. I, personally, consider coctail rings to be costume jewelry. My most "important" ring is my engagement ring, so I feel okay with being frivolous with other jewlery choices.

I wear mine to a function where drinks might be served, such as a wedding, a party, etc.
