I live in a really hot climate & must wear thick sunscreen almost everyday. I've had my necklace for about 1 1/2 years & no yellowing yet. i usually let my sunscreen dry and put a light layer of baby powder on my skin. I just make sure that I wipe the necklace down after each wear. I also have a MOP ring purchased about 5 years ago. Honestly I'm not that careful about applying hand lotion and using soap etc when I'm wearing it. It has not changed color at all. HTH

My SA in NYC said that the mother of pearl is not as delicate as everyone fears.

Thanks for sharing, emma. I asked a similar question about how delicate MOP can be on another thread and didn't get any response. I'm glad the OP asked this question and others were willing to respond. Thanks again!

catabie, twigski, emma: thank you all for sharing your experiences!

Nothing beats the collective knowledge of tpf'ers! I'm sure we all benefit from sharing such information especially since there are clearly a lot of MOP lovers here.

Anyone who knows how to safely clean more stubborn grime off MOP, please chime in!

Brionny (SA from NYC's VCA boutique outside Bergdorf Goodman) said not to use jewelers cloth or liquid. But what she told me to use is something I can't see myself doing. She said to "water" down gentle soap and clean with water. Has anyone else received any cleaning instructions??? I'm a little uncomfortable with Brionny's instructions. This is recent advice as I just had them add two inches (they did 2 links in between each motif) to my YG 10 motif MOP, and I did purchase the pendant that BethC bought as well. I am loving the pendant because it adds punch to the necklace!

The cleaning instructions I got from my SA was - polishing cloth or water only, no soap or any other kind of cleaning liquid.

Its great to read these tips, I think we have to remember that MOP has been around for thousands of years, VCA has been using it for many also (ok, not as many as a thousand ;-)) but they know what they are doing.

Mmm ... I never really had an issue with grime but if there's some left on my necklace after wearing it the whole day, I just really wipe it off gently with the cleaning cloth I got from VCA. So far, it works!

Only when I took my Charlotte Atelier ring out over the weekend that I realised I have been washing my hands during my day to day activities with the ring, which contains a centrepiece of flower-shaped MOP! And the MOP still looks as good as new(it's been almost 3-4yrs since the day I bought it)!

ps Sometimes I do forget what I own
