wow!!! I never know this is the way they sort the pearls. won't they damage the pearls by knocking against one another?

Pearls are actually quite strong because of their structure and spherical shape. They have interlocking crystalline layers alternated with conchiolin which has a cushioning effect. And scientifically, spherical surfaces distribute pressure more evenly. There was a mention in a book I recently read by Kunz and Stephenson that talked about how long ago pearl merchants separated imitation pearls from natural ones by stomping on them. The imitation pearls would crumble and the natural pearls would remain intact.

[QUOTE=Candice0985;11721678]Hi Japster! thanks for the new thread I agree the other one was getting very long, I bought a pair of white akoya studs 9mm but I am thinking of upgrading to the 10mm. Do you think the one mm is really noticeable or worth the switch? I love the studs I have but debated between the two sets for a while
let me know what you think, do they have enough "ear coverage" for an everyday pair or studs?

I forgot to mention in my previous post that the earrings i was debating between were the 9mm akoyas (which I purchased and are seen in the pics) and 10mm south sea pearls, I'm planning on keeping the akoyas I think..... but I didn't know if the differing pearl types would be noticeably different or possibly sway someone's decision more so then the one mm difference.

I still don't think it's a huge difference enough to spend the extra $$ unless your Akoyas are more of a cream color and you are wanting a very white South Sea or vice versa. If you really want to get a pair of South Sea, you might want to consider purchasing a 10-12mm that drops slightly off the ear. Perhaps one with a small diamond post or one that dangles from a frenchback. That way it's still a "shorter" earring but very different from what you have.
