So I have noticed on this forum that there are so many really nice pieces of jewelry. Some of you ladies (and gents) could be royalty with your beautiful pieces. I want to know, since being on this forum has your jewelry tastes become more ostentatious? I have noticed that I like bigger colored gemstones. I use to buy very petite rings, but now I love bigger cocktail type rings. So, what about you all? Has this forum influenced what type of jewelry you buy?

My tastes have not become more ostentatious but TPF has exposed me to a whole world of designers that I was never familiar with before. I like TPF for that! It is much easier to see pics here and get comments and suggestions from those with experience than to go blindly into the boutiques. Learning about Cartier for me has been most damaging!

^^ yes, I have seen those love bracelets. They are pretty. I have also noticed Bulgari, Judith Ripka, and David yurman. Recently, I have been buying the Judith Ripka Sterling Silver pieces from QVC. I love her sterling pieces they are so pretty. I have figured out that I love pearls (thank you Callire! LOL!), semi-precious gemstones, and diamonds. I have noticed that the jewelry on this website is a lot of designer pieces. While, I can't afford designer pieces, I am aware of designers and more information about jewelry and gemstones now. This site is full of wonderful information.

I used to only like smaller pieces until I reached my 30s. I guess I got more confident and branched out to larger pieces.
My mom says that she now likes bigger stones/jewelry because her eyesight is failing so she needs larger pieces. LOL......... |

no, tPF hasn't influenced me in anything I buy. although I have seen lots of great ideas here or things that I want, but my tastes haven't changed.
I have liked big jewelry for a long time. I especially prefer large center stones. I think it looks elegant, sophisticated, & they are statement pieces. I think this is important as now I'm a grown up. IMO the smaller rings look "little girl" on me, although I am not disparaging anyone else's taste...that's just how I personally feel about jewelry on me. |

^^ It is interesting that you bring up the "little girl" description for smaller pieces. I tend to agree that some pieces can look very juvenile on older women. I think the personality does play apart in what you jewelry choices you make.

no, tPF hasn't changed my choices/preferences . . . I always loved big but classic pieces, not 'gaudy' like Mariah's ring though

LOL... so yes, I would say while my taste hasn't become more ostentatious per se, I've definitely found it "enabling"!!

but I'm definitely a woman & not a girl!I agree that personality definitely plays a big part. I also think self-confidence does. I've noticed that women who wear large statment pieces most often seem very comfortable in their own skin. I tend to think that self-confidence grows with age. |

^^ haha! I meant older women at like the ages of 24+. I definitely didn't mean anything snide by that. I think confidence does play a part too. I guess if you were not confident, you would probably not wear a big ring. I also think that Swanky brought up a great point by saying big, but classic rings (not gaudy). So, what makes a ring gaudy and ostentatious and what makes a ring classic and big? What is the difference?

Swanky will have to chime in, but this is my definition of classic vs gaudy. gaudy to me is very bright & flashy. usually for me it means lots of little stones in a big ring. they used to call that a cocktail ring. classic for me has to do with design as well as the stones & overall look. these rings of mine are pave or have lots of small stones (like the flexible band), but the design & style is classic. a flower, a simple band, & a wave. if they were twice the size (the flower is large...they were all taken inside the same box), then they might be gaudy IMO. ![]() ![]()

I have some rings with very large stones, but they are classic to me b/c of their simple lines & elegant style.
this first ring is jade with an antique piece applied on top. it's large, but classic ![]() this is a large center stone with almost no side stones ![]() the large center stone in this ring has lots of accent diamonds, but they are below & down the sides...still a classic style ![]() hope this helps explain what I think the difference is between large & classic vs large & gaudy. sorry that the stones are dirty...haha!!! |
