Opinion on WB for him Please =)

Hi Everyone,

So Ive been doing my research and I think ive found the perfect WB for my future hubby to be. Im honestly very nervous about finding the perfect ring because he has very VERY particular tastes. Hes really a "guys guy" so even wearing a ring is a bit of a stretch for him. I really wanted to find something thats masculine and distinct. I decided on platinum for its durability, and the fact that he hates yellow gold.

You cant actually buy the ring from that site, and I think I would want to get it in store anyways, but the site has tons of rings so it was a great way to just browse.

Its a jeff cooper platinum ring. There is a version that comes with diamonds too but I feel like that might be a bit too much bling for him.

I think if he is a non-jewelry wearer, I'd go with an even plainer band. Have you thought about titanium or tungsten? My husband's wedding band is tungsten and he loves it. I wasn't sure if he'd wear it at all after the wedding but he wears it and looks at it and plays with it.

I don't know your fiance, but if he's anything like my non-jewelry wearing husband then he will mess that ring up in no time. It is a very nice looking ring, but I just don't know about men and platinum. I agree with Nooch about the Tungsten.....or even Titanium (but it is much lighter and in an emergency would be very very difficult to cut off). Either way it's a good looking ring and if you think he will take care of it then go for it.

Your choice reminds me of this Tiffany & Co ring... The Paloma Picasso True Love 24 Hour ring great looking ring.. you've got good taste.

My hubby wasn't thrilled with the idea of wearing a ring either, but now that he's worn it for awhile, he often forgets to take it off. I got us both titanium rings, and I like that they're light & strong... and something different. So does he. He's got all sorts of "manly" scratches on it now, so it probably expresses him better too. LOL It's not as "silver-white" as white gold or platinum, more of a grey/gun metal silver, and I pair mine with my platinum e-ring... the difference is noticeable then.

We have a friend who is a firefighter that has told us that titanium and tungsten cant be cut off in an emergency, and frankly that scares me a bit. Also, is it true that they cant be resized?

My main thought in getting platinum is that he loves white metals, im pretty sure if he could build his dream house it will be all stainless steel and glass. He has several favorite watches that are closer to the color of platinum so I was hoping to get something that would match. Plus, i honestly think he will enjoy the weight of platinum.

As I had pretty much made up my mind on platinum for him, im curious about you hesitance towards men and platinum? Ive heard that it is the way to go in terms of a "durable" metal, and that you can bring it back to a like new finish with some polishing. I wouldnt imagine you can do that with titanium or tungsten because of their hardness? Any experience with that?

^^ Your friend is correct: titanium cannot be cut off in an emergency. I'm sure that's ok with most people, but since both my step-dad and FIL have had to have their rings cut off in the last two years it would scare me.

At any rate, I'd go with white gold. Platinum scratches so easily and a WG ring will hold up better. My husband wanted plain, plain, plain, and is very happy with his (plain) WG 5 mm band.

I love the ring. platinum is the perfect choice...very durable.

white gold is made from yellow gold. as it gets scratched & worn, it turns back to yellow. you need to have it re-rhodium plated every year or so. platinum also has rhodium plating, but you can get it without the plating. & the color is more of a rich gray with a matte finish.

also, when you scratch gold, you lose some of the gold. the piece will weight slightly less over the years. when you scratch platinum, the metal is only displaced. the piece will continue to weigh the same.

The only reason I brought up the other materials is that they require almost no care (my husband's tungsten ring and my titanium bracelet are cleaned with soap and water) and pretty much every non-jewelry wearing guy I've ever met has liked them. I happen to love platinum, especially as it patinas - and the ring you linked (or a plain band, or whatever you go with!) will look awesome

Titanium and tungsten CAN be cut off in emergency situations.

Can a Tungsten ring be cut off?
Yes! Please be aware that in any situation where there might be a medical necessity to cut off or remove a tungsten ring--for instance excessive weight gain, hand injury, etc.,--removing a tungsten ring doesn’t pose much more of a challenge than cutting through a gold or platinum wedding band. In our own jewelry shop, as in many other jewelry shops, we have a cutting tool designed for cutting titanium and tungsten wedding bands. In addition, tungsten bands can be fractured into pieces using vise-grip pliers. When we contacted our local hospital emergency room and asked if they were equipped to remove tungsten wedding bands in an emergency, they told us that most hospital emergency rooms are prepared to handle almost anything, and assured us that it would be no problem for them.
During our 30 years of jewelry repair experience, we've only seen a dozen or so rings that have been cut off in hospital emergency rooms, and in most of those cases the rings had been bent out-of-round and were putting painful pressure on the finger. Tungsten rings will not crush or bend out-of-round, so if you shut your hand in a car door or drop a heavy object on it, a tungsten wedding band is likely to fracture into several pieces and fall off your finger freely. You might be safer wearing a tungsten ring than a precious metal band! Nonetheless, check with your local jeweler or medical facility if you have concerns.

Can a Titanium ring be cut off?
Yes! Please be aware that in any situation where it might become necessary to cut off a Titanium ring--for instance excessive weight gain, hand injury, etc.--cutting through titanium will be more difficult than cutting through gold or platinum. However, it can still be done.
In our own jewelry shop, we used a separating disc and flexible shaft tool--items commonly found in nearly all jewelry shops that work with gold, silver, and platinum--to cut through one of our 5mm domed and comfort fit titanium rings. We placed the ring in a vice and were able to cut all the way through it in 20 seconds. That speed generated too much heat to be comfortable if the ring was being worn, so one of our goldsmiths used a separating disk to cut through another 5mm domed and comfort-ft titanium band while wearing it on his own finger. He used the separating disk at a much slower rate so as not to generate too much heat, and frequently submersed his finger in cool water to keep the band cool. He safely cut through the band in 3 minutes with no discomfort or injury to his finger. Next, we contacted our local hospital emergency room and asked if they were equipped to cut off a titanium ring in an emergency. Most hospital emergency rooms are prepared to handle almost anything, and ours assured us that it would be no problem for them.
