Default opinion on diamond earrings
I recently got these diamond earrings which I love . They are about 2 CTW VS and H-I. They match very well with a bezel set diamond necklace that I have (the one in my avatar). Here is the thing, these earrings seem very fancy to me. I can only see myself wearing these occasionally for special occasions or nicer dinners out. I really can't see myself wearring these on a daily basis due to the weight (the bottom link is pretty heavy) and the length (1 1/8"). I do think the bottom piece and the dangle of it (it moves easily from side to side where as other bezels have less movement) gives it a uniqueness and dressier quality.

I was thinking about removing the bottom piece from both earrings so that they would just be 4 graduated bezel set diamonds. If I did that I would take the bottom piece (diamond with small diamonds around it) and have it put onto some plain white gold leverbacks so that they would just dangle down. This would give me 2 pairs of everyday earrings that I would probably get more wear out of, but I don't feel like either pair would be all that special. Both would be somewhat normal IMO. I do not have any other nice diamond earrings. I had some 1.6 carat TW studs that my mom had given me, but they would get lost in all my hair and didn't get much wear so I gave them back to her. I like earrings with some dangle to them as opposed to studs.

So my question is do you think it is better break these earrings up and have 2 pairs of ok, everyday earrings or leave them as is and have 1 pair of nicer special occasion ones?

Do you have a staple pair you could wear everyday?
I'd leave them as they are and make sure I had a nice pairs of studs or hoops for daily wear.

Leave them as they are and wear them often! No need to let pretty jewelry sit in the box- take it out and make it your signature piece.

I think the answer turns on how often do you have special occasions you could wear these earrings to? If it's only 1 or 2 times a year, I would break the earrings apart. If it's 1 or 2 times per month, I would keep them as they are. Personally, I don't go to many formal events so I spend my jewelry budget on pieces that can be worn every day, but it all depends on your lifestyle. Also, Swanky makes a good point that if you don't have everyday earrings, you might be smart to break these up to get everyday earrings. Would your mom reset the studs she gave you into leverbacks?

thanks everyone. I don't have any other nice studs, since the ones that I had before just didn't get enough wear. Also, since I gave them back to my mom, I wouldn't want to take them from her again. I do wear diamond hoops most days, but my hoops are very thin and not all that blingy. I have tried on large and thick diamond hoops, but once again the weight bothered me so I went for thin ones. Down the road maybe I should get some nicer hoops that are still on the thin side but with more sizable diamonds. I guess I will just leave the earrings as is for now and see how much wear I get out of them. I'm thinking it may only be a few times a year, but who knows maybe I should try to make them my signature piece and wear them more regularly. lol- I need my ear to toughen up so that the weight won't bother me.

If the weight is uncomfortable, have you tried those earring backs with the plastic circles around them? My SA at Tiffany's recommended them to help with droop and discomfort and they make a difference.

What about when you wear the earrings, don't wear the necklace? I know most people wear both, but I think when you wear a substantial necklace, it calls for very understated earrings, and vice versa. Otherwise, it seems to me they "fight" each other for attention. But this "rule" is just for earrings/necklaces since they are worn so close to each other. In other words, I don't apply that rule to bracelets and rings (but not rings on every finger please!)

elle tee- I have not tried those backings, but should check them out. These earrings do have much bigger backings than any of my other post earrings- probably to also help with the weight and length, but they don't seem to be as big as the ones that you are talking about.

Amiee3- I rarely wear the necklace either as it is more of a special occasion piece to me, but I think you are right, if I wear the earrings with a more subtle necklace they may not seem quite as dressy or overpowering. I probably would wear the two together for special occasions though. The first time that I tried them on together my heart skipped a beat - I loved the way it looked, but it is definately not an everyday look.
