have to agree with this. plus a steel watch is not too OTT to be uncomfy with (even at these times you could have bought it already years ago would that stop you from wearing it? would you buy a cheaper watch then just because of the times so that noone would see you year old cartier?)

Go with the white face. I had a black face Philippe Stein watch and at night it was ridiculously difficult to tell the time - seriously.

Wanted to add that being a student doesn't mean dresssing in sack cloth and ashes. I wouldn't necessarily wear flashy stuff either, but just as in the working world, there are students who are better off and those who aren't. Wear what you are comfortable with, honestly.
