Hi there I was just curious to see if anyone is allergic to silver, and if so have you found a way around it?

I am, I do not react to the silver the silver reacts to me. When I put on silver I turn it black. Very strange isn't it? I ruined 3 David Yurman necklaces, that is how I found out. I bought a necklace and about 4-5 hours later it was black! I thought they sold me a bad necklace so I returned it and the lady was so embarrassed and exchanged it. I put on necklace #2 went to sleep, woke up and it was black! I was livid by now....went back to DY and put up a stink. They said it was probably because they gave me one in the case that was under light for so long. So here we go with necklace #3. Same thing happens....take it back perplexed this time. They called the manager. The manager takes a white cloth and whites the black on the necklace and the cloth was green. He said he thinks I am the one turning the necklace black and to go to the doctor to get an allergy test.

So, now I only wear platinum or white gold.... my boyfriend said only you would have an expensive allergy

I'm not allergic to silver but I'm allergic to the metal with which cheap earrings are made. I haven't gotten tested but if I wear fake earrings my ears swell and really hurt, and if really bad will have pus.

My solution is to buy gold plated or sterling sliver earwires (the part of the earring that goes in your ear) and put the costume jewlery earring on that. If you are allergic to silver earrings maybe you can replace the earwire w/ a gold one?

Same here - only silver posts irritate and itch me too! Anything but gold... have not tried platinum yet. I cannot figure how a healed up hole can react that way but I almost never bother with earrings!

I have sensitivity sometimes, but I wouldn't say allergy.

I am violently allergic to nickel and gold/white gold.

I would think since the hole should heal it would be okay but maybe in some people the hole doesn't completely heal up?

I'm allergic to silver that has any nickel in it.... I asked at Tiffany once and theirs is nickel-free.

I'm allergic to most silver. Tiffany silver is the only kind I'm fine with.

I'm allergic too....I got tested, and the allergy is to nickel. I haven't worn earrings in years because my ears literally itch and ooze when I wear earrings with nickel in them. I just stick to Tiffany silver because there's no nickel in their jewellery.

you dont have to have an open wound to have an allergic reaction. its any skin contact (just like poison ivy) a lot of people allergic to silver can't wear silver chains without breaking out.

to the person who is turning silver chains black.. try finding rhodium plated/dipped silver or taking pieces you like to have them dipped. you arent necessarily allergic to silver, the silver is allergic to you lol. the rhodium should protect the silver from your sweat.

I'm not allergic to silver but my sister is. She's allergic to everything except gold. We don't know if she's allergic to platinum since she's only 12. Her ears and neck turn red when she wears silver. It looks like somebody tried to choke her.

I too am allergic to silver and nickel. After about 10 minutes I start to itch and then I get welts. I can't wear stainless steel either. I can only wear gold and have given up even trying to wear anything else.
