Smile I need help with my first luxury watch
I've decided to get my first luxury watch in the next few weeks but I have problems which one to choose.

My first love was the Chanel J12 with Diamond Markers, and this was the one I wanted all the time. Now my Dad and some of my friends have told me this would be a bad choice and I should think about it twice, the J12 is not a "real" watch, because Chanel isn't a real Watch producer like for example Rolex. They think I can't wear it in a few years anymore, it is too modish and will be out of fashion some day. They say if I spend so much money on a watch it should be a classic watch from a "real" Watchproducer, I will regret it and sooo on.

Now I am really insecure and so I began to look for other watches and found two Cartiers I like. The Roadster and the Pasha (with the three turner on the right side). I also like Breitling but I think that the watches for ladies are too small for my wrist.

Give me your inputs, thanks in advance

Your dad and his friends are right to a certain extent about the J12. Since this will be your first luxury watch purchase - it's definitely best to go with either the Roadster or the Pasha. You really need to try them on and then decide from there. Good luck.

My perspective is this: Yes, the J12 is not a Rolex - however, it is damn near indestructible and I sure like that fact for my daily watch. Another consideration, the J12 is what I call a "sleeper"; this means it is not widely recognizeable as a luxury watch except to those who know what it is: why does this matter? Well, because I can be around people who don't give my wrist a second look and then be around people who KNOW what it is and can't stop the compliments. My point, it is discrete - people who you don't want staring at your wrist won't be - and the people who know what it is will compliment you.

Lastly - will this be your ONLY watch purchase ever? Probably not! So, you should get what YOU like, not what your parents/friends/etc tell you to get. J12's don't lose value - I bought mine 2 years ago and if I had to sell it today I could sell for what I paid - why? Because retail has gone up on them, and the material (cermic) shows NO stratches/NO marks, etc - it looks brand spanking new and I wear the damn thing daily, while working with car parts/cars!!!! I have worn this watch while restoring my 1970 Chevelle!

Good Luck with your decision - personally I think Cartier's are boring - and they DON'T scream luxury, JMHO!!!

I have a Cartier roadster with pink face, a ss Rolex with rhodium roman max dial and a black 33 mm j12 with diamond markers. But I'm guessing I'm a lot older than you as I don't discuss purchases with my parents anymore! I am 44. I agree with Loganz that this probably won't be your only watch and you should get what YOU like. Otherwise you will have buyer's remorse and end up trying to figure out how to purchase the one you didn't get as a 2nd watch. This happened to me for my 30th birthday. I wanted a Raymond Weil Parsifal. But my dad and step-mom bought me an Ebel. I couldn't get Parsifal out of my mind and saved every last penny and gave up so much to buy it. I should have exchanged the Ebel and added the difference but didn't want to disappoint step-mom. Go with what YOU love!

Thank you ladies, I really appreciate your opinions. I am 22 and live at my parents' house. So I told him which watch I want to buy and all the disscusion started and I was influenced. It won't be my only luxury watch purchase for sure. I also thought about getting the J12 now and then maybe a Cartier later. But as I've said I am really insecure now. I like the Cartier Roadster and Pasha a lot too. But the J12 is still my first love, YWIM? And I am afraid what Hokaplan said could happen.

Glamourette - I just got back from staying at the Wynn in LV; while in the elevator a very glamorous woman got in with her DH and lo-and-behold - what adorned her wrist - a BEAUTIFUL 38mm white J12 (no diamonds) - can you imagine if I told her or her DH that "you don't have a real watch on"?? LOL - also, Cindy McCain has been photographed wearing many different J12's - do you think she thinks the J12 is not a REAL watch!!

My point - I come from the East Coast and I know many there only think watches can be made by the good-ole-boy network of watch makers - well - this is simply not the case anymore - the J12 is a real watch and it is a damn great one too...get what you love - and remind your parents that Cindy McCain has may J12's - this may open their eyes to the quality and legacy of the Chanel watch brand.

IMO I would go with a Rolex but you have to do what pleases YOU the most! If you love the Chanel, then go for that because YOU will be wearing the watch not your friends/family. If the Chanel makes you smile every time you see it, then go for it!!!

I went through the same dilemma last year when i brought my first high-end watch---Chanel J12 with diamond markers. I was torn between the J12 and Roadster as well. I went ahead with the J12 and love it!! But i couldn't get the Roadster out of my mind and a year later i got it, and i couldn't be happier. They are just perfect, J12 is more a causal watch that i wear for uni and weekends, and Roadster for work!!

IMHO since you love both the Chanel and Cartier, no matter which you choose now, you might as well get the other one in the near future. So don't feel stressed or insecure, go with your heart~ Both are gorgeous!!!!

P.S i had a dilemma to choose between roadster and tank, and now i'm getting a 2-tone Tank next week!!! Lol....this is sooooo additive!!

bb10lue - You and I are both addicts! I also want a two-tone but have my eyes on a two-tone rolex. I got my roadster 1st, then j12, but really want a two-tone to wear when I wear my Cartier Love cuff!

LOL Q~ You are really on a Cartier roll Can't wait to see your Love Bracelet and new watch
You are right I should calm down a bit, at the end it is only a question of time when I'll get the other watch, since I really like both (Seeing you with the roadster made me like this more then the Pasha). So maybe the question is which one to get first and not which one I should get..

Loganz, thank you so much for the input. I never thought that the J12 isn't a "real" watch, but you know when everybody around you tell you this again and again you are coming to a point where you get insecure and believe in what they say.

Can somebody who have both, the Roadster and the J12 post Pics of them next to each other?

You are so bad!

Seriously, after you get your two-tone Tank nothing else compares. It goes very nicely with the Trinity ring! Try it and see.

O/T but I think I'm back to wanting the YG Love Bracelet (closed). It's true love (no pun intended).

bb10lue - hoping you may see this! I don't know how to pm! Which two-tone Cartier are you getting? I looked at some today. Also, I saw on an old thread on a different forum that you were considering a new LV bag. It begins with a "b" like beau something. Did you purchase one and are you happy with it? I think we have similar tastes!
