Default I need help picking platinum setting! :)
Hello!

My sweet husband got me a Tiffany 7 stone platinum Celebration band for Christmas, because I didn't have a wedding band. It's amazing. Very sparkly. Well, now I need to reset my one carat diamond round solitaire in platinum. It's currently in white gold and it has tiny detail so it looks bad with the new band. My question is this. I couldn't get a tiffany setting because you must have a Tiffany diamond to get one. I want just a basic platinum band but not sure if I want 6 or 4 prong. Then, I am concerned about the grades of platinum. Tiffany uses 95% platinum and I need to be sure I get the same in my new band. What do you all think...4 or 6 prong? How high should i get it and which one will make it look larger?

He also got me the pearls by the yard necklace and a Diamonds by the Yard necklace, the one with just one tiny diamond in the center.
Thanks!
Jen

ACtually, the band is a Shared Setting, 3.5 mm wide. Very hot ring.

Ooh nice! I have the 2.2mm wide one with 9 diamonds. You should post some pics for us to see

Anyway my choice if for the 6 prong. I don't know how high you should get it.. as high as the Tiffany one I guess?

I like 6 prong.

You can have a jeweler cast and make a setting similar to the one Tiffany sells for about $600.

I would try on rings and see what looks best and is most comfortable with your new band You can then order the setting on the internet and maybe have it set at a local smaller jeweler. Gorgeous band !

Platinum prices have gone down significantly, so make sure you let your jeweler know that you know that the prices should be lower. I prefer a six prong setting with this band--a four prong can sometimes give the stone an illusion of being square. Usually the higher the setting the larger the stone looks. Set it in a similar setting as the Tiffany setting you like (most jewelers can make a copy).

6 prong since they protect the stone better.

I like 6 prongs. Stick to a small independant jeweler where you deal with the jewelers directly, not just a sales staff. And make sure they sell you the platinum based on current metal quotes.

I read somewhere that the reason why platinum is down right now is because it is not as much in demand as the american car companies and the military buy most of the platinum and automobiles are at a very low production right now. Does anyone know if this is true ?

^^ Sorry about the post hijack londonchanel! Platinum is used in automotive catalytic converters to treat exhaust and reduce pollutants. So yes, this might be the case.

personally, i like 4 prongs, though 6 is safer. congrats on ur gorgeous pressies, i'm dying for a tiffanys diamonds by the yard necklace! and u shouldn't have any difficulty finding a setting like the one they use at tiffanys (but theirs are 6 prong)
