What carat weight? I recommend you do an online search and compare prices to see what kind of deal you're getting. Check out pricescope.com

so it's half a carat/ear? And which color is it? D, E, or F?
If it's 1cttw and F color seems a little high. |

Who certified them? Have they only been appraised? I've seen people selling "F" color stones that were more like M color.

What does "paperwork" mean though? That could be an AGS certificate, or it could be a fudged appraisal not worth the paper it's written on. I suggest you do some research before making a purchase like this. www.pricescope.com is great, as ahertz recommended. Even if the friend does assure you that you can upgrade, unless you know your diamonds and what to look for you're not going to know enough to know any better.
Other posters are expressing surprise because IF D colour diamonds being made into earrings is highly unusual, unless money is no object and you must have the very, very best. But if that were the case I don't think you'd have posted this thread. F right down to I colour and clarity VS1 down to SI2 are generally seen as optimal specs for studs where value for money is any kind of consideration. Reason being, no one looks that closely at studs (as opposed to a ring or even a pendant) so you can easily get away with lower colour and clarity grades. Also, as long as the stones are cut well, they should face up white and sparkle nicely anyway. That's how you get value for money. [You need to find out the grade of the cut. This is arguably the most important factor as to how the diamonds will perform.] Suffice to say, I wouldn't pay USD$3,000 for 1cttw studs. If they were IF and D, because it's unnecessary. Or if they were VS2 and H, because those stones aren't worth that much. |

IF IS unusual for studs. Are you sure they're not clarity and colour enhanced? Regardless, I don't think they're worth that much.
