So . . . after almost 3 years of looking at e-rings- first casually and then seriously this year, we suddenly changed directions when we found an amazing deal on a sapphire and diamond wedding band in platinum. It made me want a sapphire e-ring and while it took me forever to convince my bf to consider anything other than diamond . . . he ordered a sapphire from angara last night!
The sapphire is a slightly included, high brilliance, blue sapphire thats . . . 4.79 carats . . . He says if we're going to go colored, we're going all the way. The diamonds we were considering were all around 1-1.2 carats so this is way bigger and making me a little nervous. None of the settings that would fit something that size catch my eye so I thought I could enlist your help in helping me find one. I'd also appreciate how much something like that would be to set. I'd consider 18k white gold, plat, or palladium- and I'm thinking a pave band, maybe with a little flair like this: http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-enga...es=1&set_shape= Here's a picture of the actual sapphire from their site. I'm still a bit scared of the size . . . I wanted a sapphire with a diamond halo, but this is way too big to add a halo to. ![]() Thank you! |

I agree that the stone is a little too big to add a halo to. The setting you chose is absolutely perfect for this beautiful stone. This will make a breathtaking engagement ring!

I wonder if the setting might be too "delicate" for such a bold center stone? Do you like 3-stone Tiffany-style rings? With the side diamond stones slightly smaller than center stone, but not too much. I have a modest carat wt ring like the one below, all in rounds.

I also think the setting you have above is beautiful and it would look great with a sapphire center. I also love halo settings, but I agree a stone as large as you are getting would probably be too big for a halo. Here is my halo sapphire, but I think my sapphire is about 3 carats. I guess it depends on how many mm across the top your stone is. If it is a deeper cut it may not appear as huge as it sounds when you look at it and open up more doors for you setting wise.

4.79 would be too big for a halo, i think 3ct would be max. This also depends on your ring size. if i were to do a diamond halo i would max out at 1.5. but thats my personal preference. and i wear a 5.25 ring. i tried on a 1ct with a halo and it looked perfect to me.. its attached.. sorry my hands are ugly lol..

I think you can add a very narrow halo as long as you specify to your jeweler how wide you want the halo to be--no more than 2 mm I would suggest. I think the blue rimmed in icy white diamonds would be stunning!

i love these. all leon megé
![]() i think this one has kind of a halo but i think most of it is on the side of the stone, not next to it, so it probably won't make the stone look too big. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Congrats chinadoll724 on choosing a sapphire for your engagement (btw, I love round too). I have one as well and love it to pieces. I think a halo would look great. I have considered resetting mine into a halo as I have knocked my sapphire several times putting tiny chips around the top. My sapphire is 4.36 cts set in platinum and I wear a size 6 ring. I just think the halo would really make the stone stand out even more. I can't wait to see what you choose. Keep us posted

I love everyone's ideas! Keep them coming- I like the setting I picked out, but it looked really strange on the blue nile site with a 4ct diamond so I'd have to have it modified to have a bigger "fork". I'm also keeping the halo in mind until I see the actual stone, maybe it won't be too big after all.
Rainrowan- I considered 3 stone, too, but I feel like a 4.8 carat center would be too much. It's already almost the width of my finger, there's no where for the side stones to go. I never though I'd ever have a problem of a "too big" stone until I considered sapphires. I tried putting 4.5 carat diamonds into settings at blue nile just to see how the sizes would look and the diamonds were all in the hundreds of thousands! |
