Question Gold vermeil vs. Gold plated??
I have researched both and I am confused what to do?? Or how much of a difference there is?? Will one last longer?? I just want some fun gold bangles for every day and I am tired of buying cheap ones constantly because they get ruined so quickly. So I found a set of gold plated for like $20, then I found a set of 14 karat gold vermeil for $130?? Will one last longer is it worth the extra money?? TIA

From: http://www.mainelyurns.com/gold-verm...ng-silver.html

Gold-plated: A base metal such as steel or brass is dipped into a bath of electroplating solution, with a lump of solid gold. When an electric current is applied, a thin layer of gold is deposited on the metal. Since the plating is quite thin, the plate (and hence the colour) on findings can wear off.

Vermeil: (Pronounced: Vermay) is sterling silver that has been gold-plated. Most of our vermeil is plated with 22K-24K gold. This is a good combination for those with allergy to normal, plated jewelry items. The difference between vermeil, and gold-filled, is in the thickness of the gold and the base metal used. In vermeil, the base is sterling silver.

Most common gold plated objects have a coating that is 7 to 20 micro inches, and can be 10 to 14k gold.Vermeil (pronounced 'vermay') gold is a much thicker layer that is at least 100 micro inches thick. Vermeil gold jewelry is much more durable than regular gold plated jewelry, where the coating is so thin that it is easily worn off. Regular gold plated jewelry is usually done over lesser metals such as brass. Vermeil gold jewelry is always at least 14k gold and is done over sterling silver.

I have some lovely vermeil Ted Muehling earrings...and they were expensive. Bought in Bergdorf Goodman's. But finally, the gold did wear off. You have to have them "re-dipped." So do keep that in mind.
