My boyfriend and I are having a discussion about the cost of an engagement ring. He makes approximately 100K per year. Am I crazy to ask for a 30K ring? I prefer a 1.75-2 carat D color solitaire; I view this as the most important day of my life and do not spend heavily on other things, and do not wear other jewelry. He would like to get a 1 carat solitaire, I color. Can anyone provide an opinion? Thanks

well.. He surely makes a lot of money and can easily afford a 30k ring but then I am NO ONE to talk about money with anyone here so I'd say you should let him decide since he is the one spending the money and then get a better ring down the road... :) you can always upgrade later and you don't want to get into a HUGE argument because of such a petty thing considering u can always ask for something better later :P

I just got engaged with a 9k ring and my fiance earns the same as your bf. There is no way he would buy me a 30k ring, at least not at this stage! We live in an apt and he's a recent college grad, so anything more expensive would come after his earnings increase and after we have our dream house. I guess it just depends on where you're both at in life and what your priorities are if a 30k ring would make sense or not. Good luck!

I don't want to be judgemental here....but....
Are you sure you really NEED a $30,000 ring? If you answered ''yes'' to that question, then ask yourself WHY. A ring is just a symbol of your love. Maybe someday you can upgrade to a larger size if you really feel it's necessary. But really, why should he spend 1/3 of his salary when you will have other expenses coming up as newly married people? Trust me, let him spend what he wants and thank him for it when he presents you with the ring, whatever the cost or size. A man giving a woman ANY ring is the most loving, romantic and generous expression of his love----be open to that and don't ruin it with your requirements! |

RingGirl1234 is actually my bf and he's not giving the complete information on the situation. He actually make more than 100k and I also make a bit more than him. We've been together for 3 years and he doesn't understand that the ring is very impt for me.
It sounds a bit shallow but my work environment expects a certain set of standards. I don't want to upgrade later for a bigger ring. What's the point of wearing a big diamond ring on old wrinkly hands? If he doesn't get me the ring, I'm just gonna go get it for myself. |

I think 30k is a lot on a salary of 100k. Especially if you guys have debt already and need to purchase a house. My honest answer is I think you need to think a bit more realistic and come down to 10k or less.
You can always trade up in time. That's what most women do. There is a reason you rarely see 5cts on a 25 yr old hand. =) Stay away from big name dealers and buy your own diamond wholesale. For 10k you can get a good grade 2ct or so. Get a trusted independant jeweler to custom make your ring. |

oh wow, you both got quite some drama here. :) I wish you the best and you both come to an agreement.
you can always purchase a ring for yourself and he can always get u one to wear as an everyday ring. Whatever works for you :) |

You're doing it because your work environment has a set of standards? That's incredibly sad. I don't even want to know how you act when it comes to everything else.

We don't have any debt. Hes making close to 200k. He's also got inheritance. I don't see why he's being such a stingy fart.
