I was just reading another thread where many people posted that EGL is unreliable. I've heard conflicting stories about EGL. I've been told by some to stay far away from diamonds graded by EGL, and by others I've been told EGL is okay, it's EGL Israel that you have to be worried about. Any input on this? Does anyone actually have an EGL stone that they purchased and afterwards found to be way off from what it was supposed to be?

I have an EGL stone and am pretty confident in it's grading.
They are not as reliable as AGS or GIA but not as bad as IGI. I have read that they are actually getting better rather than worse. I would prefer a GIA over an EGL stone though. |

My beau has a jewelry store and the way he's explained it to me is that there are "different" EGL grading labs, and reliability varies according to where a stone is graded. For instance, he feels like a cert from EGL USA will be much more accurate than one done by EGL Israel or other EGL labs outside the US. However, based on his 20+ years experience in the business, he considers GIA the most accurate in the industry, (with EGL USA second) and says that he sometimes sees slight variations between GIA grading and that of EGL USA.

I would grade the labs: AGS, GIA, EGL-USA. I'm only including US labs.

AGS and GIA are highly regarded as reliable. With EGL, you need to get an independent appraisal.
