Default Earring allergy only...does the nail polish thing really work?
Over the past few months I've become unable to wear earrings, even sterling and 14k. My ears swell up and itch like crazy. I'm not sure what happened. I got my first holes sixteen years ago, and the latest ones eight years ago.

Is it true that putting clear nail polish on the post will help? I thought I'd ask first since I'd have to run to the store to get some. TIA.

I think it will work. Many people I know have done it. You may have to reapply after a few wears, though.

Have you tried 18k gold or nickel free jewelry? I have a friend who is allergic to 14k, but 18k is fine.

You could also try earrings with implant grade surgical steel posts.

Yup, it worked for me. I'm allergic to most cheapie metals (like in earrings you get from Claire's), but the clear nailpolish worked great for me-I used 2 coats. jan228 is right though, you will need to reapply after a couple of wearings.

Try palladium - it's hypoallergenic!

I've never done the nail polish thing, but my friend puts Neosporin on the posts before she puts hers in and says that helps.

14K has about 58.5% gold and the rest is another metal alloy to strengthen it....nickel, silver, copper, ect. So most likely you will need a higher karat with less of the nickel/metals mixed into it (18K, 22K, 24K)

The Nail polish will work but as Lvbabydoll mentioned, you will need to reapply after 1 or 2 wearings.

I had to switch all my posts and/or reset all my good earrings into platinum after my daughter was born because I developed a metal allergy . I am very limited as to what I can wear but I do use the nail polish trick for fashion earrings on the occasional night out. It works!

I never tried that. I just buy earrings that are gold, silver or at least nickel-free.

It does NOT work for me. I have to wear platinum or surgical steel earrings.

Sometimes you can have a reaction to the nail polish also. You can take earrings to a jeweler and they can plate them with rhodium. That is what I had to do on mine. I can wear white gold, platinum, or surgical steel. The rhodium plating is what I had to do for a very long time until white gold and platinum became popular again.

honeslty, the nail polish thing doesn't really work, at least not for to long. you more then liekly have a nikel allergy like me... my choices are either get all gold earrings, or sometimes I like to wear some with a bit more jazz, that are not gold, and I can still wear them, but only for a day, or else I have real problems.

The nail polish thing I treid before, a fried of mine did too... it works, but you need to re-coat the earrings almost every 1-2 days! Which creates a build up overtime, which end's up becoming bacteria city... and thus you will more then likely develope an allergy from that over time, or have a reaction to it, ie: ear infection...

Only other idea... if you have a pai of earrings you love, but they are not gold, and contain nikel... take them to your jewler, and get the ear part coated with a top layer of gold... I have done this many times, it's bascially gold covering... and not overly expensive either... but best to use 14-18k, although 10k would work to.

best of luck!

i apply paw paw ointment / rosebud salve / vaseline before wearing the studs.

they are the only things that stop my ears from being itchy and infected.

been doing this for years. i just make sure i wipe the earrings clean after taking them off.

wannabelyn - does this vaseline idea work for say earrings you would want to wear for a week or two at a time? or do you just have to keep reapplying? i got a pair of diamond studs for my 18th birthday and gucci studs a few years ago and can hardly wear them any more because they make my ears so uncomfortable.
