Default Diamond Studs (2-3ctw) or Replacement E-ring?
Hi

My B-day is coming up and I've wanting and waiting for diamond studs and E-ring replacement for over a year now.

My e-ring got stolen over a year ago and we decided to wait a bit longer to replace w/ larger stone with 2-3 carat that I would be happy for 5- 10 yrs. I also sold my 1ctw studs 6 months ago save for e-ring.

For the past 6 months, I've been interested for an Emerald cut. Jeweler called me last week and said that she has 2.17 ct GIA VS1 and G color. The jeweler keeps asking me if I am sure about the cut because she will not take a trade in w/ Emerald cut because of the demand of it.

She has asked me at least 5 times already. I thought I wanted the Emerald cut, but now after speaking to her, I have second thoughts what if I something more sparkling or even bigger. I also love the round cut as well. I also called my regular Gemologist appraiser and asked him. He said an Emerald cut is about 40% less than round cut. After speaking to both of them makes me unsure of should I get it or not.

I've couple rings than I wear now (3 stones 1.4 ctw and pears (4) in 2.5 ctw, and good size half-eternity band).

I also need diamond studs 2-3ctw with good clarity and color.

Well, I wish I can buy both ring and studs at the same time, but unfortunately, I can only get either the ring or studs. What would you I do? Let me know what you think.

Wow - sounds like a fun choice to make! IMO, a 3 carat tw would be just far too heavy to sit correctly on my ears, but 2 would be great!

For me, e-ring but you don't sound totally in love with the emerald cut. Because if you were, you'd jump on it. So I would go for a round. Save the studs for another gift.

that's a tough choice. my instinct is to say an e-ring because you'll wear it every day, & I wouldn't wear diamond studs every day. are you happy with the alternate rings you've been wearing? doesn't seem like it since you've been saving for an e-ring & even sold your previous studs. seems like you want a new e-ring more, but are confused right now because you're unsure about the shape you want.

as far as shape of an e-ring stone is concerned, you get more for your money from a round. but...you have to follow your heart. you're going to be looking at it every day. it really doesn't matter what anyone else says. emerald cut is probably my favorite shape. it would make a stunning e-ring.

From the way she described it, it doesn't sound like you are thrilled about the emerald cut, so perhaps you should pass on it. It would go for the replacement ring in a round cut because round cut sparkles more and looks bigger than an emerald cut of the same size. I'm not a diamond stud person, so naturally I would pick ering over diamond studs.

Round cut e-ring. Emerald is nice, but it just isn't as sparkly as some of the other cuts.

I agree - don't worry about "demand" and what everyone else thinks - it's YOUR ring, buy something that will make YOUR heart soar!

Plus... I mean not to be rude, but a 2-3 carat that you'll be happy with for 5-10 years? Why don't you buy THE ring that you LOVE and will love for your whole life? Most girls would die for a 2-3 carat ring! If you're really only thinking of a 5-10 year ring then don't stress about it! :) I would buy something that you'll have for the rest of your life, personally. Do all the "trading up" etc with other jewelry.

Don't rush into anything... but buy what YOU love, not what you can sell or trade in later. KWIM?

Last night I could not sleep at all, keep tossing and turning all night trying sort out. My head is too busy.

Surfergirljen, my DH agree w/ you on rather wait for a little longer to buy THE RING that I love for the rest of my life. He rather buy something one and love it until I died than keep buying ring ever decades. I did tried on the 6.4 ct Cushion and I am head over heel and dreaming about it for the past few nights. That is my HOPE diamond. I am willing to sell my DH to buy that ring. Oh mine...

Based on majority of ladies say that they would get the e-ring now and studs later. I love the diamond studs too and I wear it quite often.

^^swanky is talking about cubic zirconia simulated diamonds. they are sold everywhere...including in 14k gold settings.

I have to say, I agree with her 100%. save your money for diamonds on your hand that you can see. the prevailing wisdom is to buy lesser quality diamonds for your ears anyway, since you can't see them that well. no one will know what you have in your ears.

^^^yes, I meant anything that LOOKS like diamonds. . . and I don't normally suggest that
I'd totally rather see it on my hand everyday than have to find a mirror and look vain staring in it to see the studs. Seriously.
I have both, studs that I think are big enough and a ring that's also big enough, and I get far more enjoyment staring at my hands; red lights, when I sign CC receipts, texting, etc. . . you always see it!

How long would you have to wait to get the 6.3 cushion e-ring?

Don't forget to insure the new jewelry!!

I always loved what my great-grandfather did for his wife. Every 5 years, he purchased a different e-ring, and had the old one made into something else. She started with a solitaire - by the 5th anniversary, he replaced it with a 3 stone, and made the solitaire into a pendant. At ten - the ring was a 5 karat with a halo setting, the 3 stone was remade into studs and a right hand ring... and so on until she had some major bling at 40th anniversary!

so... 3 stone now, and have those made into studs when you get your 6 karat?
