Hi all,

I want to buy a birthday gift for a friend and she wears custome jewerly. The kind you can buy a a Macy's or Dillard. I don't know which one to purchase as far as brand ie.Monet Ralph Laurent or Charter club. Please help me which one is better in quality. I have heard about Monet, but....?

I think you mean costume jewelry, not to be confused with custom-made. I would consider all the brands you mentioned to be the same quality. You really have to look at the individual piece, b/c different designs within the same brand can vary widely. Always look for quality rhinestones/Swarovski crystals if the piece has them, you don't want cloudy stones. Make sure all the stones are there, sometimes they fall out. If it has crystal beads, make sure these shine nicely and are not cheap plastic or fire-polished. For metals, make sure the piece is not already changing color or flaking metal off or showing rusty areas. I would look at the clearance tables b/c these items are often 75% off and you can still find some nice pieces if you dig. Most costume jewelry is just not worth buying for full price.

My favourite is Kenneth Jay Lane, but I am really loving some of the Alexander McQueen and Marc by Marc Jacob pieces as of late !

I also really like Kenneth Jay Lane and Tom Binns is a favorite, but pricey. Made her Think is another very cool brand. If you look on ShopBop.com they have some great pieces that are very different. I just got a set of rings from Noir jewelry and I'm very happy with those too.

Ayla - McQueen's costume jewellery is TDF this season. My sister bought the skull ring - love it

I love David Yurman and Kenneth Jay Lane best. For less expensive pieces, I think Banana Republic has some really cool things.

Check under the glass counters, those are the special costume pieces. The pieces hanging on the carousels are okay but not great. I use to purchase all my Christian Dior and Givenchy costume jewelry from behind the glass counter years ago. Very nice.
