I don't know if i should even try it but there are days when I'm tempted to get some hair highlights. I'm Asian with black hair (although it's not really the dark black, sometimes there'd be streaks of dark brown when viewed in certain lighting). What do you think will look great with my haircolor? Should I even mess with my hair color at all? I guess sometimes I just feel like stuck in a rut and want a little makeover but I'm scared it might turn out bad. TIA!

I don't like highlights that have a lot of contrast (blonde on darkbrown hair), so I'd say a nice dark brown highlights would look good on your hair. They'll look more natural and the process of dying it shouldn't be as harsh as a lighter color

^^ I'm completely the opposite! I must agree blonde ones aren't my faves, though, but I'm a fan of red, pink, purple etc highlights on dark hair.

My college roomie was also asian and had jet black hair with deep red and some lighter pink highlights in her hair and it looked quite good! |

I'm find with almost any color for dyeing hair, except blonde streaks on black hair. It looks really cheap to me.
Something with less contrast will still warm up your hair color and make it more interesting. I am going to do a warm caramel color all over my head soon. Highlights really help brighten up your hair to make it look more lively.

I say don't mess with it. A lot of ladies would love to have glossy asian hair.

Highlights look great if done right, and I totally understand your itch for change, but me, I'm glad I listened to my ma and didn't mess with my Asian hair. I like that it's healthy and shiny and that I needn't bother with roots. (My African-American coworkers told me they wished they had my hair :P) And if you consider big Asian stars like Gong Li or Zhang Ziyi, I think they look beautiful with black hair, and by no means are they unfashionable.
Ultimately, I think you'll look good either way. If you decide against coloring your hair, though, you can go instead for some nice jewelry! :) |

Thanks for sharing your opinions on this! Since I'm not really sure about this, what Violinistgirl and Elizabethk said has made me think harder and I'll probably stay content with my hair.

take it from me - Don't Do It! I also have black Asian hair. My whole life I have wanted to add in caramel brown highlights. I finally did it back in September and I hated it. I ended up having to use that Clarol Herbal Essence to dye it back and my hair has not been the same healthy shiny hair that I used to have since the original dye job.
I looked to "average". I think it took me going through the ordeal to realize that I have hair that many people would kill for. Although, if you are really itching for a change my mom does this cool thing with some semi permanent shine product that also gives you blue or purple hi-lights. It sounds really weird, but it looks so cool because it is really subtle. Someone help me out here. I only half know what I am babbling about here. BTW, she also has black asian hair, which is why I mentioned it. |

My hair is dark brown, almost black and I had caramel highlights all over and hated it. It didn't look natural and made my dry hair even more dry looking. I'd recommend doing a gloss treatment for shine, no color.

just remember that once u begin, it's hard to stop. i'm korean, and have been dyeing my hair for years - i've been a light-mid brown shade with blonde highlights, reddish brown all over, dark chocolate brown with caramel highlights, jet black, etc...my favorite has been mid-dark chocolate brown with maybe honey-caramel colored highlights. the upkeep, however, has been killer and very expensive. since we are talking about starting to have kids, i'm trying to go back to a darker shade to minimize the amount of hair dye i would have to be exposed to and am currently dark brown-natural with some dark caramel highlights. the problem has been that it's almost impossible to match natural asian hair with dye, so there will always be some sort of root showing. i love the look of my hair dyed, but it is something that is pretty much a life long commitment!
