I have naturally dark brown hair (almost black), I'm Asian-American and I have gotten highlights done since I was 18... I've experienced w/purples, reds, blondes, caramels. I find that the purples don't really stand out, if thats the look that you are going for... whereas the reds/blondes and caramels are obviously more of a standout for highlights. I just got my hair done today and did caramel highlights, I tend to always go for them just because they looks so rich and so gorgeous

caramel highlights might suit your hair color.

But choose your purple carefully! Stay away from magenta, and mix shades if you have to to get the shade of blue-violet that will best complement your skin tone and make your eyes pop! It should be dark - just a smoosh lighter than the black of the rest of your hair, and if you have reached that age where we are supposed to "soften" our black hair, be sure to put a few of those highlights close to your face. Practice with the wash-out stuff, so that even if you go to a salon, you will go knowing just where you want the highlights to be, to get the same softening effect you would get if you were able to lighten your whole head to coffee! (Which some of us can do and some can't, a pro can tell you on which side of the line Fate has dropped you!) |

Check out my avatar! I'm not asian (I'm black) but my hair was black and I got caramel, honey and blond highlights put in and they looked AWESOME with black hair! When I got my highlights retouched this last time though, since my highlights were lighter(for the summer) my stylist did end up changing my base color from black to medium brown, but I do think I liked it better with a black base instead.
As others have stated the key is finding someone that has experience and knowledge with bleaching/dying black hair. Also, once you get them done, you can't stop! lol |

Red or auburn! Very sexy!
I have naturally black hair and I've gotten caramel, blonde (and other similar shades) highlights, but after awhile it always starts to look kind of orange-ish (ew), so I dont recommend just from my experience, and I always get my hair done at Mitchell's or somewhere professional. |
