I would consider dark reddish brown highlights in black hair.

I am slowly getting those unintentionally, since I started addressing the white "skunk stripe" issue with dark brown Color Gems demi permanent instead of the drugstore black I had, in my ignorance, used for the first twenty or so skunk stripe years!

I have a deep red color. They are subtle but still visible. In the sun, they are very light though. I love it..looks really pretty

I'm Asian with naturally JET black hair, and have dyed and highlighted it fiery red, violet, blue, teal, green, burgundy, copper, and plum... of course not all at the same time. I do not dye/highlight it anymore because I'm so damn sick of it and happy with jet black hair. Moreover the darker the natural hair color, the more obvious the regrowth which will be terribly unsightly.

Sure if you want to experiment, go ahead, but use a hair stylist familiar with dyeing black hair otherwise either the color won't show up, or won't last long.

I have dark brown hair that is often mistaken for black. The best contrasts I have found are actually reds, purples & blues. The blue-based colors don't 'set' as well as other colors, so you can try those & they will normally wash out in about a month. I get so many compliments on the color - it really 'pops' in the sunlight. You can also try picking up a temporary color from Hot Topic or Torrid to try it out for significantly less than a stylist. If you like it, then you can always have it done professionally to see if it lasts longer. I definitely can't go with any highlights with any yellow undertones, makes anyone in my family look 40 years past their actual age.

What product do you use? Or do you get this done at a salon?

I went ash brown w/ blonde for about a year and I loved it! EXCEPT I would NEVER do it again because my hair started to fall out after when I dyed it back to black. I can only attribute that to all the dying. I got it done at a pretty expensive salon too.

And it is a never ending cycle of maintenance. I never had to condition my hair before, but after dying it I had to use tons of conditioner!

Also in college I used to put in blonde streaks myself, but that never made my hair fall out. I guess the chemicals you buy at the drug store aren't strong enough for that.

I wouldn't do it! I'm never coloring my hair at a salon again. I'd probably do it at home though with a tint but nothing too dramatic.

Have you thought of a color gloss instead of highlights. My friend in Florida has black hair down to her waist. She uses a burgundy color gloss on it and her hair is so pretty. When the light hits it you can see some color but you also notice how healthy it is and it has a wonderful shine.

The most beautiful highlights I ever saw on black/very dark brown hair were on a model in a Vogue fashion shoot.

They were golden caramel, brown and dark red.

I am asian myself and have mixed with my hair since I was 13. I've had everything from pink to purple. You name it.

Personally I like blonde highlights on asians. And then I mean really blonde, not the caramel or something like that. To me it seems like brown, red or caramel color is the only color that ppl recomend to us asians!

Although, it is nice if you do this once or twice, then I would recomend you dying your hair black/brown and redo it again otherwise your entire hair will go blonde(like mine lol)

It looks hawt IMO. With black/brownish hair and real blonde/witish highlights and not cheap at all.

EDIT: Also, go to an asian hairdresser. I do when I want something special, cuz she knows just how to do it right

Alot of people have been suggesting blond/toffee/caramel colors. - I think they would be nice if you can maintain them 24/7. They do go yellow if you dont take good care of them.
So I say a red or a mahogany color.

I dyed my hair at home, the picture was a darker brown then my natural brown hair, but it came out jet black! I went to the salon and did not want to do a color correction and put blonde highlights all over instead, it came out really nice. Maybe you should discuss with a stylist so you can figure out a good color for your hair..good luck!

I never got highlights because I didn't really think I would like them until a few months ago when I just got tired of my boring hair. My hairdresser was DYING to put highlights in my hair but I was always too scared until he assured me he would do small chunks that wouldn't be too intense.
We went for a carmel/brown/redish color but now that it's starting to grow out I've actually been thinking of making the top dark again and doing blonde streaks on the under layers of my hair so that you would mainly see them when I move my head..

I wanted to try a non-traditional color so the bottle is 'Special Effects' semi-permanent hair color in 'Blue Velvet'. I found it at a Hot Topic store. It does wash out over several washings & I use my dark towels to dry my hair when I shower, just in case - But if there were reliable permanent blues I might go to a salon. So far, the salons I have been to have all told me that their blues & purples don't last very long either, so I'd rather not pay the extra expense if it's going to fade just as quickly with a Salon.

RAW is another brand of wash-out color in bright & alternative colors. I have not tried 'Color Fiend'.

I could probably hunt down a copy of 'Gothic Beauty' - They're sure to have a lot of retail sources for alternate hair colors.
