I am a newer hair dresser and did many asian hi lite jobs while in hair school. I can tell you it is a science to get an asian girl's hi lites "right". It looks absolutely gorgeous when done properly, but just make sure the person doing it is a color specialist with asian hi lite experience. If left in too long the light blond hi lites can appear green on very dark straight hair and if left gold/caramel witout a toner, they will often look brassy. My recommendation if you do it, is light brown tones added throughout for a natural glistening effect or light beige blonde chuckier around the front for a very dramatic effect.

I never colored my hair at all until this past week - I had some really subtle wine and dark violet reds put in - the hairdresser put these underneath my top layers so I won't have to upkeep them. I love it! It's just enough that it's something new for me and not too shocking.

I'm Asian and recommend chestnut highlights (a lot of caramel highlights come out orangey, ugh). I've also had fuschia highlights which was REALLY fun!

If you didn't like the highlights just dye your hair black. |

I used to dye my hair in so many colours, but for the past year or two, it's been au naturel, and if I dye it, it's always BLACK, pure black now. My mom never liked any colours on black hair because not only does it look extremely fake on an asian face, you'll damage your hair, and she's always had Liz Taylor's hair as her ideal.

...how about a deep burgundy or chestnut? One of my roomies in the sorority had incredible, lustrous black hair and would put a cobalt blue rinse on it so it didn't turn her hair blue but the blue highlights were stunning when they caught the light.

I've had red highlights before and boy, are those hard to keep up!! If you don't mind frequent touchups, then go for red!

I say, "Go for it!" I, too, was also looking to try something different. Go to a reputable salon and start with subtle color. My hairdresser added brown/golden highlights to my hair and I, and my husband, really like them. I wanted color that did not need touched up until approximately 8 weeks have passed.

And I am assuming that the hair you want to highlight is all you. If, by chance, your black hair has started to turn white, and you have been using permanent hair color to keep that fact private, forget it. But don't despair! There is this hair mascara stuff you can get, that you swoosh over your hair that will give the illusion of highlights and washes right out, and I can attest that it DOES work on black hair! It comes in all colors, from light blonde to the aubergine of my own highlight dreams, and while the texture of the colored strands is not fabulous to the touch, to give you an idea of how you would look with this or that, or just to change things up once in a while, at $4 a tube at your local Sally's, you can't beat it! |

Hihi! What I do is the peeking highlights, where the top layer is black, and the layers underneath are highlighted. I like red hahaha. It slowly fades to a decent light brown, and then I'll touch up again. Peeking highlights mean you require less maintenance. :)

My hair is dark brown and I got dark caramel highlights. It looks almost brown. I love it. It looks natural.
