I vote don't do it! I am not asian, but my natural color is almost black, and I've been through the gamut of highlight colors. None of them look right - and it is a constant fight to keep it from going that nasty brassy-orange color. I've finally come to terms with the fact that my hair is just not really suited for those sunny (or even not-so-sunny) highlights that so many people look great with. Yeah, it gets boring sometimes, but what're you gonna do, yk?
Also, as someone mentioned - the crazy colors (pink, purple, etc) do look good on black hair - BUT - keep in mind that in order to get that color, your stylist will usually have to completely bleach that section out to get it that color which will turn your hair into straw! |

my natural hair color is REALLY black. So black that people think I dye it black (and I'm Chinese, too!) so I add dark chocolate brown and caramel highlights to my hair. They're very, very fine and closely done so you don't notice it but it's not as severe as my natural color.
EDIT: I've been trying to find a picture of my hair where you can see the highlights...and I can't find one. It's THAT subtle! |

I think it depends on what color you want. If you want a brown I would do a dark brown but if you want more of a red tint you should do a really really deep auburn.

I agree with the ladies who say don't highlight your hair. I'm asian too with naturally black hair. I highlighted my hair like crazy while in high school. I went with brown and blonde highlights. It was a pain to maintain and touch up because my hair grows really fast and the roots show so quickly! Plus my hair is thick and needs to stay moisturized; it got a lot dryer and had lots of split ends. After high school, I stopped coloring my hair and have let it be natural ever since. (I'm 23 now.) I definitely prefer it all natural. I actually think it's gorgeous on asian girls, because it's so prevalent to see asian girls with dyed or highlighted hair. Plus, it keeps your hair much more healthy and silky.

Well, ladies.. I have a different opinion. I am Italian with very dark brown hair. I have also dyed my hair all shades and colors and I find that what I have now is the most flattering for my natural shade. I asked my hairdresser for some "face frameing" caramel highlights. She didn't use a lot of foils, just enough to face frame some peaks of color along my face. The color is a dark caramel color blending nicely into my dark hair. It actually looks like I had a day at the beach, (if the hair could actually lift from the sun, LOL). I love it as it looks very natural and suddle. I get stopped all the time by people telling me how nice it looks.

Ok..I TRIED to take a picture of it...
It's really subtle but there's actually 2 shades of highlights in my hair. It's more noticeable in the sun but otherwise it just adds a bit more depth to my black, black hair. The first time I highlighted it it was all virgin hair. The second time, they added a glaze to my whole head but as you can see it's still very glossy and dark. If my hair still looks very black it's because it is. I just didn't want it to look so flat so I added highlights. The thing is, when you're hair is black and glossy it can look like a sheet instead of moving hair..KWIM? Sorry if the picture's not that great but it really is hard to take a good picture of it ![]() P.S. sorry if my hair looks messy...I'm about to go to bed

Not a fan of blond or light colored highlights on black hair. Dark red highlights look right with black hair.

Over the last 25 years I've experienced almost every color there is (of course when I was younger). Over the last 20 years, I pretty much stayed with auburn (reddish brown) or chestnut brown. My next visit I think I will be a bit more daring and maybe add a bit of blond to it.

Make sure you go to a good salon, and not a cheap one. Highlights look horrible when they're done in cheap salons. I think subtle highlights (or painting) look good on Asian hair. |

I, too am asian with black hair - I personally have never did the home kit highlights. Instead I go to a salon to get it done. My reasons are - they know what they are doing and can tone down the color for me if need be. I have found that having a deep burgundy as highlights looks really good - it is subtle in the office/home settings and you can only see a hint of it in the sunlight. It is really nice - I sometimes get two tones - highlights and lowlights. It varies. I have to also agree that the maintenance on it sucks - which is better if you go with subtle colors. When the color starts to fade it will also look more natural looking.
Just my 2 cents. |

If you want to try it - get it done at a salon.
I like dark red highlights on black. There are products out your salon should have that lift & color - they do not have to do a 2 step strip & color process especially on virgin (non-dyed) hair. The problem with red though is no matter how good the product - they fade out, it is high maintenance for sure. |
