When she was approached to do the show Jeff agreed to do it with her (he was the perfect "spouse" because of his financial status.) It was a career move for Gretchen, she got called out on it and continues to deny everything. She did care about Jeff but she was not "in love" with him.

Why would Jeff bother doing the show and for that matter why would he let his kids be on it as well? It doesn't make sense to me. And just who is Gretchen hurting besides herself?

Of the original 5...Lauri was divorced and downsizing, Jeana was in a struggling marriage to a former baseball player, Jo was living with Slade, Vicki was an up-and-coming insurance agent, the other one (I forgot her name) was dealing with cancer scares. The show did not even focus on them spending money. It was about their day to day lives. As the series progressed, I guess the women who were interested in appearing (or Bravo) made themselves look wealthier, more well-to-do, at or above the level of the RHofOC ladies. Maybe I'm alone in thinking this, but I remember this show being billed as a real-life "Desperate Housewives", not "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous".
Admittedly I did not watch the first season - I think I didn't discover this show until the middle of the second season. But having just watched the first two minutes of the very first episode I really do think they billed this as a "richer than you will ever be" type of show. The first minute consists of voiceovers from everyone talking about living in Coto and how the average house costs at least a million dollars. I don't think this was ever going to be a show about your average housewife. To me it's just kind of contradictory to always focus on the money aspect of the show and then have half of your cast members in the news. In the grand scheme of things will it bother me enough to stop watching the show? Not a chance, but it does make me wonder why they don't screen their participants a little more. I guess the problem is like VLL mentioned - the people who really do have the money would never deign themselves to be on a trashy reality show.

i was definitely under the impression that these women were richer than your average. I remeber in the opening credits, in season 1 (although I never watched the shows exclusively) there was the statistic of families who live in gated communities.

so when we get articles and news that these folks were renting, foreclosed or filing for bankruptcy it just makes the show look even more fake that it was especially when during the show, the women portary them as well off. oh well

ITA with this. The first season seems, so....quaint now. And it was before the economy really tanked too.

I think many of us grew tired of Gretchen and those crocodile tears when she was challenged. Although, I didn't think Tamra needed to try and humiliate her on the reunion show. Tamra came across as jealous and bitter.
They acted friendlier to one another in season one. Big difference in the more recent seasons, a lot more cattiness.

I agree, I never got the impression the show was supposed to be about your average everyday middle class housewife. I also thought that Bravo billed it as a show about about how the other half lives, and the women were supposed to be wealthy women living the fabulous lives.

I agree...I also had that impression. I think that quote kind of set the tone, perhaps incorrectly.

Cool! Which informercial? Gunthy Renker (or whatever their name is) has their headquarters here...I've always wanted to go in and offer to do a testimonial! LOL.
