I've been watching season 1 on DVD (some I missed; some I'm rewatching). Betty showed more emotion and seemed more open back then. The current Betty is cold. This is probably in large part due to disappointment with her life and marriage. So I don't hate her.
But I find her failure to nurture her children annoying. Whereas Don, in spite of his other flaws, does seem to show more love and compassion towards the children. I still think it's ridiculous for Henry to propose to Betty because they have spent almost no time together. All he knows from what I can see is that she is beautiful. |

I'm pretty sure Betty is so closed off because she's traumatized by the fact that Don took off on her while she was pregnant.
I would imagine that would make her feel pretty bad about herself and she could see her kids as a constant reminder of Don. I don't think Don is that great of a father. He comes home, kisses the kids before bed and kisses them before he heads off to work. He did comfort Sally when Grampa Gene died and he was cradling baby Gene after the blowout with Betty. But that was really the most nuturing we've seen him. If he was such a great father, he wouldn't have taken off on his family like he did when he was in California. |

What little time he does spend with time he is loving. But it is little time. Very little time. He seems to spend more time with his mistresses than his son. |

I agree, I don't doubt that he really definitely loves his kids. I love his scenes with Sally. I feel like she is probably the only one who ever sees the real, genuine Don. On the other hand, he is rarely around them the same time Betty is. When they are together, they are more focused on the tension between them. He seems to stay out of her way when she is with the kids, and she out of his.... |

If my memory serves me correctly, he was off on his business trip to California with Pete Campbell. He met the bohemian heiress and took off with her jet setting crew. He pretty much skipped out on his business obligations and left Pete. I thought Pete got back to NYC before Don did.

He left for CA, came back and Betty informed him that she was pregnant. They have been together ever since, Don was trying really hard, in his own way. |

well just because she tells him something doesn't mean it's the truth either way, i think it's ridiculous that people can't have their own theories about this show. that's the genius of it, it can be interpreted so many different ways. |

However, Betty didn't ask Don to run away to CA for a month and have another affair, when the affair with Bobbie Barrett was the reason why she wanted him gone to begin with. So did he leave or did she want him gone? Both. Whose fault was it? Both. Pox on both your houses. |

That's why I wonder if they will divorce this time. I can't see Winer separating them again. He did that one. I can't see them going back and forth... ![]() I wonder if there will be any huge surprises tonight. Weiner wouldn't allow any previews, no one knows what is going to happen. Even the reviewers, who usually screen the epsiode a day before, have not been allowed to see it early. Now I'm really curious! |
