(source: JoongAng Daily) [TV Review]Being a ‘trouble and strife’ looks daunting June 13, 2007 “New Definition of Wise Mother and Good Wife” airs Mondays and Tuesdays on MBC. There is a New York photograph that I hold dear, and it’s not the one of the Samsung signboard high above Times Square. My keepsake features an average couple strolling through a museum. The couple, in their 60s or 70s, were modestly dressed and they held hands as they listened carefully to what each other had to say about Edvard Munch. After my voyeuristic encounter with this charming couple, I realized how important it is to have someone by my side, particularly after the scary age of 45. I mean, the world is often a dreadful place and we all need someone to take the edge away. Ok, I know. I must admit that I have been an advocate of the single life for years while writing this column. And it’s not that I am repulsed by the idea of tying the knot. I am just a fragile creature who is afraid of the fickle nature of relationships, and I have huge respect for couples with relationships or marriages that have lasted for several decades. I suppose it would be a great thing to have a family, watching the children grow and going to a museum with a silver-haired husband. Still, this positive thought about marriage was ruined last Sunday afternoon when I was dutifully watching reruns of the new MBC-TV drama “Sinhyeonmoyangcheo,” whose title is best translated as“New Definition of a Wise Mother and Good Wife.” This drama reminded me of the grim reality of marriage in this country, where, for centuries, it has been thought of as a “union of two families,” not just the binding of a couple. Talk about pressure. Marriage has frequently been turned from a life-affirming pleasure into a huge responsibility, especially for women ― hence the old saying “hyeonmoyangcheo,” which implies that a woman should be both a “wise mother and a good wife.” No wonder so many housewives get depressed and forget they have any identity apart from being a mother and a wife. MBC’s new drama, airing at 10 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, tries to recognize that we may now need a new definition of a “wise mother and a good wife.” Well, I sometimes think that I need a good wife, and I am not confident about fulfilling the duties of either wife or mother. The drama juxtaposes a traditional housewife, to whom a husband and her two children are everything, and a single woman to whom life means a career and having fun. Things get complicated when the single woman has an affair with the husband. The husband decides to leave the traditional wife, saying that he is bored with his marriage and wants a new kind of woman who can be a partner in fun and laughter. “I don’t want to be the one who takes all the responsibility for bringing home the bacon,” he says. So a woman has to be a wise mother, good wife and a fun-filled partner to make her husband’s life enjoyable? God forbid. The 50-minute episode had more to offer, as the housewife tries to save her marriage (although it was her husband who committed the transgression) by begging him to stay. There is even a mother-in-law character who said that marriage means having to be patient with many things, including “short flings” by the husband. Dumfounded, I could do nothing but think “Hello! Isn’t this the 21st century when women are supposed to have suffrage and equality in relationships?” This drama leaves a bitter aftertaste for single viewers like me, who think that marriage is quite a demanding job anyway, aside from burdensome definitions of the “wise mother and good wife.” No wonder the drama has had a low audience rating of under 10 percent since its debut last month, but MBC has no one to blame but itself. The show is nothing but a grim reminder that marriage can be unrewarding drudgery. As a tax paying citizen of Korea, I ask the government to do something to stop this TV series, if they don’t want to see single women grow ever more horrified by the idea of saying “I do” at the altar. In the end, getting to the point of imagining life with a husband who will keep me happy until my advanced years still seems to be a lofty ambition. By Chun Su jin ================================= |

(source: BROasia 6/13/07) Jang Nara and Kim Jung Hoon appointed publicity ambassadors of Korean dramas ![]() Jang Nara and Kim Jung Hoon are leading the way to promote Korean dramas which have been losing popularity in China. The two are attending STVF 2007 as publicity ambassadors of Korean dramas being held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in China. The Korean Broadcasting Institute announced on the 13th, "Jang Nara and Kim Jung Hoon attended the 'Korean Day' events including the appointing ceremony, fan autograph sessions, and others on the 12th." Jang Nara who has been active as a singer and actress in China joined the group after her solo concert in Beijing on the 8th and 9th. Kim Jung Hoon who has become popular from the drama series 'Princess Hours (Goong)' was also cast as the main character of 'Yeon Ae Byung Beob (Love Strategies),' a joint drama production of China and Korea. The 'Korean Day' event the two attended gathered the attention of the press, but once again reflected the declining export of Korean drama series to China. KBI commented, "The declining export of Korean drama series is also happening in Shanghai. We must place efforts in creating more joint production projects amongst various Asian countries to change the one-way exporting image of Korean content, and must establish a supporting system for such efforts." ========================================= |

(source: The Korea Times 6/14/07) Rain Strikes First China Ad Deal By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Rain Rain's star power will reign in China as the hallyu star models for Fuma, a local confectionary company. The one-year contract is the singer's first deal with a mainland Chinese brand. The 25-year-old returned home after completing photo shoots and filming a TV commercial under tight security from June 8 to 9, according to Yonhap News. The advertisements featuring the pop star and Fuma's new roll cake will be revealed in September. "Rain had previously modeled for Pepsi-Cola, Pentec cell-phones and make-up brand DHC, among other global labels, but this is his first advertisement for a mainland Chinese company," a Chinese advertisement firm representative told Yonhap News. "Rain, like other superstars in China, chose the food industry, which is an easy means of reaching the masses." Fuma plans to spend about 50 billion won to promote Rain's ads, which will run on national television as well as on more than six satellite broadcasting systems and every regional channel, according to the local advertising company in charge of the project. Fuma will also print the pop star's face and signature on the cover of various chocolate, coconut, strawberry and banana-flavored products. The confectionary had previously employed Chinese celebrities such as singer Coco Lee. The advertising company said that Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, will hold a press conference in China in September. "Various TV programs from CCTV, Funan satellite stations and others are trying to invite Rain to make guest appearances," the advertising representative said. "After hearing about the advertising contract, other major Chinese firms are trying to get in touch with him." Rain was scheduled to perform in Hawaii on Friday as part of his world tour concert, but a pending lawsuit with an American record company over the use of his English name 'Rain' has postponed the date for the time being. ========================================= |

(source: tour2korea 6/15/07) Kwon Sang-Woo Begins his Japan-China-Southeast Asia Promotional Tour ![]() Kwon Sang-Woo was restrained from foreign operations for a short while due to adverse complications, but has plans to begin actively promoting his new movie. This coming July, Kwon Sang-Woo is arranged for an interview regarding the opening of his official website and promotional tour in Japan. Due to complications with his management company, Kwon Sang-Woo was unable to run his homepage until April, when he reopened the site featuring a magazine shoot of him that was taken in Australia. In addition, Kwon Sang-Woo will be in China later this month for an event helping sick patients, who are fans of his. Although he has been declining all promotional event requests in China, it is rumored that Kwon Sang-Woo decided to attend this event since it is to help sick patients, and not simply another fan meeting. Furthermore, Kwon Sang-Woo is not only arranging plans to visit Japan and China, but Southeast Asia as well in order to meet with other international fans. Kwon Sang-Woo was said to have regained his self-confidence while making his new film, ‘Fate’. Contrary to Kwon Sang-Woo’s intentions, he received a lot of misunderstanding due to a number of complications and had to bring all his overseas promotional activities to a halt. However, affiliates explained that Kwon Sang-Woo has started promotion activities once again, not only because the complications has somewhat been settled, but because he had regained his energy while working on his new production with his colleagues. Kwon Sang-Woo has started filming his new movie, ‘Fate’, on Jeju-do Island earlier this month, and will be there until early next month where he has to move to Seoul thereafter. Most of the filming that takes place on Jeju Island will be outdoors, and many Japanese fans are continuing to visit the location for the chance to see Kwon Sang-Woo and his co-star Song Seung-Hun. ======================================== |

(source: BROasia) Song Seung Heon, cast in movie 'Sookmyeong (Fate)' directed by Kim Hae Gon Song Seung Heon whose drama appearance after his discharge from the military has been delayed will be first starring in a movie instead. Song Seung Heon was cast in the movie 'Sookmyeong (tentative title: Fate)' to be directed by Kim Hae Gon who successfully debuted by writing the script of 'Fairan' and directing 'Between Love and Hate' The movie is an action noir film that draws the story of the friendship, loyalty, and betrayal of four friends. Song Seung Heon will be playing the role of the main character Kim Woo Min. Director Kim commented about the role saying, "He is a dualistic character who lives a quiet life but being cornered into an extreme situation displays an explosion of ___ and throws his entire self into it." The last movie Song Seung Heon starred in was 'He Was Cool' in 2004 with the most recent drama series being 'Summer Scent' in 2003. The movie will crank in at the end of May and is planned to be released at the end of the year. DATE: 2007-04-04 ------------------------------------------------- Kwon Sang Woo And Song Seung Hun To Appear Together For Their Next Movie ![]() Simultaneously Casted In Director Kim Hae Gon's "Destiny" After his close friend Song Seung Hun came back from military service, Kwon Sang Woo was casted in the movie "Destiny" (directed by Kim Hae Gon, and produced by MKDK王M-net Media Inc.) for his comeback. The production company MKDK for the movie "Destiny" revealed on the 19th that "after 'Almost Love,' Kwon Sang Woo chose 'Destiny' as his next project. The role he will be playing is the protagonist Jo Chul Joong, comes to a pitiful end because of his endless desires." Kwon Sang Woo and Song Seung Hun are well-known in the entertainment community as close friends. Song Seung Hun had planned to appear in the drama "Sad Sonata" with Kwon Sang Woo, but because Song Seung Hun's military service issue grew bigger, he was not able to fulfill it as planned. When Kwon Sang Woo was still a rookie actor, they showed dynamic interaction in the movie "Make It Big!" Director Kim Hae Gon revealed that the reason for his casting was that the image of Kwon Sang Woo, which seems tough but hides a gentleness inside, is just like the dual nature of the character Jo Chul Joong. Even in the midst of a dispute with his previous agency and rumors of receiving threats from crime organizations, Kwon Sang Woo plans to appear in a drama right after confirming his next movie. The movie "Destiny," which portrays the friendship of four friends and their betrayal, is still in search for the remaining roles and aims to start filming next month on the 21th. (source: The Korea Times 05-01-2007) Daniel Henney Gets Serious By Kim Tae-jong Staff Reporter ![]() Daniel Henney plays a Korean-American adoptee who returns to South Korea in the hopes of finding his biological parents in the new movie titled "My Father." / Courtesy of Cineline The nation's heartthrob Daniel Henney has played perfect Prince Charming roles in his work such as the wildly popular television drama "My Lovely Samsoon" and last year's romantic comedy "Seducing Mr. Perfect." Now he is gearing up for a more serious role in the new film, "My Father." In the new film, he plays a Korean-American adoptee, who later returns to his home country in the hope of finding his biological parents. With this challenging role, he seems to be confident as he has much in common with his character. He comes from a multinational background with a British-American father and Korean-American mother, who was herself a Korean-American adoptee. "My mother was an adopted child. It's something that's been around my whole life since I was very young. Her whole family was adopted. And I've also been involved with some adopted children and some of the children in Korea regarding that matter," the Korean-American actor said during a news conference last Thursday at a studio of Arirang TV in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul. To understand and create his character, he talked to his mother on the phone to know what she went through growing up, what she might have thought at certain times, he said. Directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the film revolves around James Parker (Henney), who is adopted into an American family at age five. When he grows up, he joins the U.S. army stationed in Seoul to meet his birth parents. But he finds out that his father is on death row after killing two people. Despite his efforts to take on a new role, however, his character may be still seen as just a handsome man from the States and his fans may find it irritating reading Korean subtitles as his character speaks English. But he said he has never confined himself to certain roles due to his multicultural background or lack of ability in speaking Korean, and he is now ready to take on any role if he likes the film. "Obviously language is an issue ... (but) at this point, I wouldn't turn down a Korean role. I feel it's a doable for me now. I think I can handle more Korean. I just don't want to embarrass myself and anyone. That is a major issue," he said. His confidence in Korean may be tested in the film as he will speak Korean in many scenes. During the conference, he understood the questions in Korean without the help of a translator although he answered them in English. "The story takes place over two years. So in the beginning, of course, his Korean is at beginner's level like I was. Gradually over the course of the movie, he gets quite better," he said. But the improvement in Korean seems to be a hindrance in the film as he thought it was hard to pretend that he was clumsy in Korean in the beginning of the film. "The problem for me is that I spent the last two years, personally in my life, trying to learn Korean and lose my accent. Because of the director, we really had to try to speak in the American type of way of beginners," the 27-year-old actor said. The scene that the actor filmed on Thursday involved him appearing on a television program with other adoptees holding placards with their birth date and Korean names on them to find their birth parents. Henney's line was "I miss you, dad and mom," in clumsy Korean. "My Father" has completed about 80 percent of its production and is slated for release in the fall. ====================================== |
